Here is a little before and after… Been working on this Data East Laser War pinball machine for the last couple weeks. Data East pinball machines are notorious for having an audio hum. Sometimes this is due to bad grounding, old failing power supply capacitors, or shorted rectifier diodes. The main culprit, however, is a poorly designed 12V DC filter circuit. The audio board uses unregulated 12VDC for the power amplifiers and the AC ripple is clearly audible even in well maintained machines. Online forums have chased this issue for years and eventually settled in on just eliminating the problem at the source by running the audio board off a separate clean power supply. A small switching power supply with 5V, 12V, and -12V outputs can be found on Amazon for under $30 and completely fixes this problem. It took me about a half hour to perform the install. The longest part being pinning a new connector to the power supply and soldering the power wires to the switch. REMEMBER to UNPLUG the machine before working on it, there is live 120V AC in the machine even when turned off! ⚡️😵 by @alphagalhikes

Visited the southern third of the #tuscaroratrail access points in preparation for supporting @theboneskeleton Tuscarora Trail #fkt attempt in November. Had to get creative finding access points on some of the longer sections. The Tuscarora Trail is a ~250 mile remote trail running through Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. It was developed as an alternate route to the Appalachian Trail, splitting off in Shenandoah National Park and rejoining near Duncannon, PA. by @alphagalhikes

Did a little recon to prepare for some fun in November. These are road crossings along the Northern sections of the Tuscarora Trail. The Tuscarora Trail is a ~250 mile remote trail running through Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. New Gear Updates! I’ve recently updated my power bank setup to include the NITECORE CARBO20. As many of you know, I’m a proponent of NITECORE products and used NU25 / NU20 classic headlamps and NB10000 gen2 power bank on my successful 2025 Appalachian Trail thru hike. I took lots of photos and video, edited video each day, and then uploaded to YouTube daily. I also posted many times a day to instagram and Facebook. In areas with poor reception, I’d hike up to higher elevation and leave my phone attached to the power bank while uploading - sometimes I needed to leave the phone uploading for hours overnight! This became a bit of a game for me, trying to get a full video uploaded every day. For the most part, I was successful in achieving daily uploads. Between my two headlamps, my iPhone 15, and my Garmin 67i messenger/tracker, I used a lot of power. I carried 22500mAh of capacity and typically depleted it over 4 days. For a couple of stretches, I carried 40000mAh of capacity. During that time, I wished that the devices would charge (in and out) faster and weighed less. The CARBO20 is a new 65W Fast-Charge power bank from NITECORE that weighs 320g (11.3oz). It’s not much bigger than the NB10000, and has two USB-C outputs. It charges my phone quickly and I can get between 3 and 4 full charges with it. The display has been updated and now has %remaining as a number as opposed to led dots. In use, this unit runs much cooler than my NB10000, which, at times, got as warm as a hand warmer. I’ll be carrying this with me now as I continue to hike the Appalachian Trail, in sections, towards a second completion. I’ll also continue to provide updates on how this power bank performs compared to my old setup. I’ve included a few photos of the unit in “unboxing” style. The unit is very simple and comes packaged with an 8” USB-C to USB-C cord. It has one touch sensor to check the power level, a digital display, and two USB-C ports. One port is bidirectional and used to charge the unit. Made it down to Trail Days with April Reed Kriz in Damascus Virginia! Found a nice spot in Tent City to set up. Looks like great weather for the weekend and a slew of enthusiastic hikers enjoying it. Got my 2026 hang tag and ready to start putting miles back in toward my second completion of the #appalachiantrail 🤓

Hiked a bit in #shenandoahnationalpark South of the #bearfencerockscramble this weekend. During my successful #appalachiantrail thru hike last year, I saw my first #yellowladyslipper #flowers here. One year later, they’re blooming again. There were also lots of pink trillium around. Happy Mothers Day! 💐 by @alphagalhikes
