Treating the body, spirit & earth as one
🎓 TCM Acupuncture - Class of 2027
👨🏽‍⚕️ Now accepting patients in Ottawa student clinic
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
A lot of people still think of acupuncture as something you go for when your back hurts.

Pain is definitely one reason people come to acupuncture, but there are many other reasons too.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, we look at the bigger picture instead of focusing on just one symptom. Sleep, digestion, stress, energy, pain, recovery, and emotional well-being can all be part of that picture.

For the next 10 months, I’ll be seeing patients in student clinic as part of my acupuncture training.

It’s official!

After 3 semesters of studying acupuncture techniques, treatment planning, clinical safety, and spending countless hours developing my needling skills, I’m now treating patients in our supervised student clinic.

Every appointment is overseen by experienced Registered Acupuncturists and instructors, which creates a safe environment while giving us students the opportunity to apply everything we’ve learned in a real clinic with real cases.

Student clinic is also an affordable way to experience acupuncture (only $20 per session). Are you looking for support with pain, stress, headaches, sleep, digestion, sports injuries, mental/emotional support or general wellness? This is your chance to work on your health in the most budget-friendly way.

If you’re in the Ottawa area and have been thinking about trying acupuncture, I’d be honoured to be part of your care. I’m grateful for everyone who places their trust in student clinicians and helps make this stage of our education possible.

If you have any questions or would like to book an appointment, feel free to send me a message. See you in clinic! taken in Ottawa, Ontario by @alphonsomedicine

I think experiencing our full potential has a lot to do with staying open, trusting our inner knowing, and working with the flow of life — having the courage to follow what feels right, even when you can’t see the whole picture yet 🌊 by @alphonsomedicine

I’ve had a few people ask why I went from working in shamanism, plant medicine & mental health to going back to school for Chinese Medicine.

To me, it’s just another way of looking at the same thing.

Over the years, I’ve explored different ways of working with the nervous system, shifting perspective, processing pain and expanding our awareness.

The medicines and practices we work with can be helpers along the way. They can help us soften what we’ve been holding & bring movement back to places that have become restricted.

Because when you’re constantly dealing with pain, tension, stress or exhaustion, it can start to take up a lot of space. You have less patience, less energy, less capacity. Small things feel bigger than they normally would. It can affect how you sleep, how you work, how you relate to people, and how much energy you have left for the things you actually love.

When some of that burden starts to lift, you have more room for life itself. More energy to be present with your family. More patience in your relationships. More clarity when making decisions. More ability to enjoy your work, your hobbies, your body, and the people around you.

That’s (in part) why Chinese Medicine makes sense to me. I’ve worked with different medicines and approaches over the last 10 years but the intention has remained the same: to help people suffer less, feel more connected, and have more room for the life they’re here to live ☯️ by @alphonsomedicine

2 people can come in with the exact same symptom and still need completely different treatments.

That’s one of the things that makes Chinese medicine so patient-centred.

Take fatigue, for example. One person may feel drained because their digestion and energy are weak. Another may feel exhausted but also tense, restless, overheated and unable to relax.

The symptom is the same but the pattern is very different.

Pulse taking helps us tell those pictures apart.

We feel different positions on both wrists and pay attention to things like strength, depth, speed, tension, and fullness. Those qualities can give us clues about what systems may be struggling, where the body is depleted, and where there may be tension, heat, cold, or poor circulation.

Then we compare that with your tongue shape & colour, sleep, digestion, stress, pain, energy, and health history.

It’s the combination of all those little pieces that helps us get closer to the root of what’s going on — not just the symptom you walked in with.

One of my favourite things about studying Chinese medicine is learning the many ways we can treat disorders or promote internal healing beyond acupuncture.

Tuina (“twee-nah”) is a form of Chinese medical bodywork that uses different hands-on techniques to warm the channels, move circulation, release tension & help the body prepare for treatment.

Our teacher uses Tuina in most of his treatments as a way of waking up the body before acupuncture by helping the nervous system become more receptive so that less needle stimulation is needed.

There’s no one size fits all approach in TCM. There are many different treatment strategies and modalities that can be blended together depending on the person & their presentation.
