It’s National Close the Gap day! 🥰🚲

Proud Wiradjuri artist, Jodi Shannon, has pimped @drelly_warren‘s helmet in time to join @tourdecureaus on #sigtour2023 tomorrow. The artwork depicts the Darkinjung community, Dr Elly and kids, the journey and meeting places along the way, protected by her nephew Beau who continues to inspire us.

Jodi painted the artwork for our recent AlpineEveresting campaign and helped us raise $100000! Thus money funded a Cancer Navigator for @yerin_eleanorduncan_ahs. Jess is now 5 months into her new job, working hard to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with cancer, breaking down access barriers and improving outcomes.

The community owns this initiative and is developing programs and policies to defeat cancer at a local level. 💥💕

Big moment for @yerin_eleanorduncan_ahs welcoming Jess Cain Westaway, proud Gomeroi woman, to the team! She is their new Cancer Navigator who will support First Nations people living on Darkinjung Country with cancer. This position is funded by the $100000 raised by our Alpine Everesting team! 👏😃

$100000 presented to @yerin_eleanorduncan_ahs today by our team with @tourdecureaus 🎉🤩🚵‍♀️

Phenomenal effort by our riders who climbed 10000m and rode 400km in 36hrs in high country Victoria to highlight the cancer gap for First Nations people.

🔸23% cancer deaths in Australia occur in First Nations people
🔸There has been a 12% increase in cancer-related mortality over the last 14 years in this population

The gap is widening, not closing.

The money raised by our team will fund a Cancer Navigator position to break down access barriers for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their families with cancer. There will be an enhanced cultural focus on screening, prevention and support as well as someone to walk alongside people during cancer treatment and survivorship. This community-driven project will build on the strengths of existing services like Yerin to drive solutions from the grassroots level. Local leaders and elders know what works to improve cancer outcomes. They just need the resources to do it!

Thank you to our Federal MPs Dr Gordon Reid and Emma McBride for taking this message back to Canberra. We’d love to see this position funded long term and rolled out in other regions to address cancer disparities.

Incredibly grateful to meet staff of the centre and gain an understanding of the community support and services offered for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People on Darkinjung Country, Central Coast.

The monies fundraised by the Alpine Everseting Team will fund a First Nations Cancer Navigator Position with Yerin, which will make a great difference in the cancer journey and outcomes for patients and their families connected with the centre.
