When on a snowfield or a glacier, do you know how to tell what is actually underfoot? If you are at a glacier terminus, did you know it can look and feel like you are walking on solid ground, but actually be glacier ice? If the dirt below your feet is suspiciously wet, you might be on glacier and still need to keep an eye out for crevasses or moulins. Hear running water under you but don't see it? That could be a stream of melting snow, making the snow you are on thin and breakable. Snow-buried tree, downed logs, as well as large rocks can cause weak snowbridges as well, causing you to plunge through! Knowing how to interpret what the snow might be hiding is a quintessential skill when in the mountains! #alpineinstitute #mountainlearning #glacierskills by @alpineinstitute

Setting up camp on a glacier is a whole different game than pitching a tent in the woods. There are no soft tent pads or convenient water sources waiting for you. Instead, you're building platforms in the snow, anchoring your tent so it can withstand alpine winds, digging out kitchens and gear caches, and constantly thinking about how the sun, weather, and terrain will change throughout your stay. A well-built glacier camp isn't just more comfortable. It helps you stay organized, conserve energy, and prepare for the days ahead. Like so many things in the mountains, success comes from the details. Most people think the biggest dangers in the mountains are the obvious ones like crevasses, avalanches, rockfall.But some of the sneakiest hazards are the ones that catch people completely by surprise.Glaciers don’t just reflect sunlight, they amplify it. It’s possible to get sunburned under your nose, under your chin, and even inside your nostrils from reflected UV. That’s why experienced mountaineers cover exposed skin and wear glacier glasses, even on cloudy days.Snow can be deceptive too. A firm-looking patch might actually be hollow underneath, hiding running water, downed logs, or open space. Snow often melts from below as well as above, creating weak spots that can collapse without warning.And then there’s the weather. Just because the calendar says July doesn’t mean it’s summer in the mountains. A warm trailhead or camp can turn into snowfall, freezing temperatures, and whiteout conditions higher on the mountain. The climbers who thrive are those that anticipate the worst and pack for what the mountain might throw at them.The mountains reward those who pay attention to the details. Success isn’t just about strength or fitness. The mountains are never static.For decades, climbers approaching the Coleman Deming route on Mount Baker looked up at a landscape dominated by ice. The lower icefall spilled down the mountain, and much of the rocky terrain visible today remained buried beneath snow and glacier ice.The change is impossible to ignore.Mountains have always evolved, but witnessing that evolution within a single climbing career is a powerful reminder of how quickly these landscapes can transform.
