Mountainfilm 2026 delivered heaps of awe and inspiration topped with a healthy dose of rage for the things we should all know but only independent filmmakers and media bring forward.

Delightful to see so many old friends and meet new ones (so many not in these photos)!

What an honor to have our film screened at Mountainfilm and be a part of the change we want to be and see in the world!

Gratitude and congrats to all the filmmakers, award recipients, festival director, guests and the tireless leadership, staff and festival volunteers @mountainfilm !! ❤️ by @alpinist007

Another great IFMGA Spring Technical Meeting with colleagues, new and old from 28 member countries around the world! Always a joy to connect with some long time friends in these circles and make new ones.

It’s an honor to be the VP of the IFMGA Technical Commission and help move the needle forward with inclusivity in our profession. We had a half day workshop on Women in Mountain Guiding that was well received and I thank Zoe Hart, Anna Keeling, Ilona Gaweda, Mairia Theresa Vasquez and our 1st woman president-elect of the IFMGA Rita Christen for helping with my presentation to the delegates. This was the first time in the 6-7 times I’ve participated in the Technical meeting that I was not the only woman in the room! Onward and thanks to the delegates for their support with this work! Many other great topics and workshops, thanks to our Austria hosts led by Albert Leichtfried and his colleagues. Big shout out to Kurt Walde, President of the IFMGA Technical Commission for leading the way!

Not a day goes by I don’t think about polar bears.

I’ve been fortunate to see three in my lifetime, so far. They are part of my lived experience.

They are magnificent, marine mammals (Ursus maritimus) inhabiting only the Arctic (latitudes North of 66°).

Their massive paws are designed to cruise on sea ice and paddle the Arctic Ocean, ranging from 1,400 to 15,000 sq. miles a year.

Females may adopt a stray cubs (even if they already have two) that stay with them for up to two and a half years.

The loss of their habitat - sea ice - is a looming threat to all life as we know it on our beautiful blue orb.

This compounds the connection I feel… with contradiction’s I experience daily - awe, fear and hope.

In beauty they walk…

1. Polar bear last month in Svalbard with a reindeer kill, Skansbukta
2. Polar bear last year in Svalbard, Ymerbukta
3. Polar bear in Svalbard, Van Keulenfjorden
4. Polar bear and beluga whales, Svabard, Van Keulenfjorden
5. Krista Wright, Executive Director, Polar Bears International
6. Hilde Fålun Strøm, Ambassador, Polar Bears International
7. Tracks. #payattention #respect

Polar Bears International is the only non-profit organization dedicated solely to the protection of polar bears and their sea ice habitat.

I am super inspired by my two dear friends Krista Wright, Hilde Fålun Strøm and their colleagues doing this important work!

Heavy seas, wild wind and firm snow surfaces prevailed for trip two in Svalbard for an adventurous week with a great team!

The Ocean Sherpa and family have been a consistently safe, comfortable home and welcome respite from the Arctic in full conditions!

Such a joy to share this remarkable place with awesome peeps! Big shout out to the Ocean Sherpa crew and my trusted co-guide Bård for another amazing adventure!

How fortunate and grateful I am to have just shared one of my most cherished places on the planet with some of my dearest, friends! Most of whom I have known since college (40+ yrs!) and others for several decades ❤️

Aboard the beautiful Ocean Sherpa we experienced Arctic Svalbard for seven days together witnessing unimaginable beauty, wildlife (polar bear!) and great ski mountaineering ahead of the busy season… no tracks, no other ski and sail trips in sight with predominantly good weather and conditions!

Our auction is 39% of the way to our $45,000 goal — and today we're spotlighting one of our incredible experiences from our Climb with Legends series.

Ice Climb with Angela Hawse @alpinist007 in the Ouray Ice Park

Angela is one of the most decorated alpinists in American history. She led the expedition where Tom Whittaker became the first person with a disability to summit Everest. She was among the first American women to earn IFMGA certification — and she's now the first American ever appointed to the IFMGA Managing Committee in its 60-year history.

But ask anyone who's climbed with her: it's not the résumé that makes the day. It's her patience, humor, and instinct for teaching.

The winning bidder and a guest get a full day on the ice with Angela as part of our Climb With Legends series. She rarely guides in the U.S. anymore — this one won't come around again.

Bid before Thursday night at 8 pm MST. Link in bio or at https://secure.qgiv.com/event/psauction/. Every bid helps Paradox Sports expand access to climbing for people with disabilities. by @alpinist007

World Glacier Day! Last year I had the honor of speaking at the UN in NYC for the launch of World Glacier Day.

In the last year, glaciers have lost approximately 450 billion tons of ice, marking one of the largest annual mass losses on record.

This winters snowpack is 50% of average in the my home range the North San Juans. Although there are no glaciers, the stunning landscape is shaped by past glaciation with remaining water sources dwindling.

Winter of 2025-2026 is the warmest on record for the Western U.S. decimating our already emaciated snowpacks. Signs of climate chaos are everywhere (but our government just bid off the Arctic to the fossil fuel industry).

I pay reverence to glaciers and 100’s of days and priceless experiences that have shaped my life on them. I honor their sacredness to many, their steadfast strength and resilience over eons and their role in the balancing planetary health.

I grieve regularly for their loss but find solace in the work of so many good people and organizations fighting everyday to protect our beautiful planet. Turn your passion into purpose and fight the good fight, whatever it is, we can do it!

Happy International Women’s Day! Celebrating all the strong, bright, competent, compassionate, kind women in my life!

And all the beautiful women who have Not Yet come to know that You are a Goddess!

That we even have an International Women’s Day is a testament to the enduring oppression and marginalization of women throughout the world. We can do better.

Shout out and gratitude for all the men who lift women up, who are allies, advocates and champions for Women’s rights, our work and our equality. And to the brands, events and programs elevating women in the outdoors.

This is a photo of a badass all-Women’s expedition to Ama Dablam in 2003. This was a group of alum from Chicks with Picks that I organized and guided with IFMGA guides @kathycoz and @annakeelingguiding in 2003. We climbed the mountain completely self-supported and hired an all-women’s Sherpa team for basecamp support. There is nothing we can’t do when we set our minds to it and stay the course!

These spaces continue to be male-dominated - with media attention predominantly the same. When we begin to see more representation of ourselves in these spaces, it becomes more inviting, supportive and inclusive. We still have a lot of work to do!

Happy International Polar Bear Day!!

Long live these spectacular creatures who are barometers of human and planetary health!

Shout out to @polarbearsinternational and the good work they do with education, research and conservation of this vulnerable, iconic species which faces real threats from climate change and habitat loss.

This beautiful female was captured by the mast cam of @oceansherpaexpeditions on our ski and sail trip last spring in Svalbard. Fortunately we had just gotten off the ship and put our skins on and were able to get back on deck to watch her for the next hour. What a gift! by @alpinist007

38 years in the mountains, five expeditions to Svalbard.

Still Angela @alpinist007 shows up with the same mindset:
- Move as a team
- Stay patient
- Put safety first
- And let the mountains set the terms.

One of the few female IFMGA mountain guides in the world. Angela brings depth, precision, and a steady presence to our expedition aboard @oceansherpaexpeditions.

Swipe and get to know your guide. 👉🏼
