🎮 THE GRID CHARACTER SPOTLIGHT: APRIL REIGN

Next up in my character-by-character breakdown of The Grid by Midway Games is one of the ladies of the roster, April Reign! Unfortunately, she’s closer to the bottom of my rankings, but she’s still got some interesting tricks up her sleeve.

🧍 CHARACTER: April Reign
🔫 STARTING WEAPON: Zeus Gun
💥 SUPER MOVE: The Gopher

April’s Zeus Gun has an interesting projectile, but in my opinion, it just isn’t all that effective compared to some of the other starting weapons in the game.

Her super move, The Gopher, is one of the game’s evasive abilities and definitely has a unique animation. April literally digs underground like a gopher and reappears at a random location on the map! 🐿️

The problem? It’s relatively slow, making it difficult to use effectively in the heat of battle. It can work in certain situations, but the results are inconsistent, and the timing has to be right if you want to get any real mileage out of it.

⭐ MY TAKE: A lower-tier character and the second-to-last worst in my ranking. She’s not completely hopeless, though! With smart strategy and well-timed use of The Gopher, April can still be effective in the right hands.

20 characters. Countless ways to play. Let’s break them all down.

Here’s a rare piece of The Grid history! An original, new-old-stock set of official Midway The Grid cabinet side art, complete with a manufacturing date of 03/08/2000! 🤯

It’s absolutely wild to see a set like this in person, let alone smell the ink! The scent is still so strong, it’s like it was printed yesterday! 🔥

This year isn’t even over yet, but 2026 has already been the craziest year of my life by far! The AL-CADE was blessed yesterday with a visit from video game royalty! 👑🎮

My brother and good friend @youngsaibot came by and brought along one of my childhood idols, the co-creator of Mortal Kombat himself, @therealsaibotoo (John Tobias)!

It was an absolute dream come true to welcome you into my home, introduce you to my family, and play my all-time favorite game, The Grid, right here in my home arcade!

Just like when I met Ed Boon for the first time back in March, the childhood version of me would never believe any of this if I could go back in time and tell him what this year had in store. These moments are truly surreal, and I’ll cherish them forever!

Thank you both for making my year and taking the time to hang out with me. Next time, we’ve gotta get Ed in here to complete the circle! 🔥

🎮 THE GRID CHARACTER SPOTLIGHT: FLINT WILDER

The next character in my breakdown of The Grid by Midway Games is my CURRENT FAVORITE of the bunch! Flint Wilder has been my main for the last 3 years, and there’s a reason I keep coming back to him.

🧍 CHARACTER: Flint Wilder
🔫 STARTING WEAPON: Uzi Maxim
💥 SUPER MOVE: Turbo Run

Flint’s Uzi Maxim offers continuous fire, making it a solid starting weapon in tense combat. When your aim is on point, this bad boy can be surprisingly effective!

But his real strength lies in his super move, Turbo Run, which might be one of the BEST abilities in the entire game. Flint launches into a super-speed sprint in whichever direction you choose, and if he grazes an opponent along the way, it sends them spinning and briefly stuns them—almost like Kabal’s iconic spin in Mortal Kombat! That leaves your opponent vulnerable to an instant kill if you time it right. 👀

Turbo Run is also incredibly useful in larger six-player matches, allowing Flint to cover ground quickly, reach the other side of the map, and get back into the action with minimal downtime.

⭐ MY TAKE: S TIER! He’s been my main for three years, and Turbo Run is a huge reason why. Speed, utility, and the ability to set up devastating kills make Flint an absolute monster in the right hands.

20 characters. Countless ways to play. Let’s break them all down.

The Grid Arcade by Midway Games is obviously my favorite game of all time, and it had an incredibly interesting roster. The game starts you off with 8 playable characters, but there are also 12 secret unlockable characters hidden throughout the game, bringing the total roster to 20 playable characters.

So, I’m kicking off a character-by-character breakdown with the face of the game himself: Wes Armstrong.

🧍 CHARACTER: Wes Armstrong
🔫 STARTING WEAPON: Single Barrel Shotgun
💥 SUPER MOVE: The Swipe

Wes may be the “default” character, but don’t let that fool you. His Single Barrel Shotgun is one of the most effective starting weapons in the game, while his super move, The Swipe, can be absolutely devastating.

Within its sweep range, Wes can take away your opponent’s weapon—or their health if they’re unarmed—and briefly stun them in the process. With the right timing, that stun can create an opening for an instant kill. 👀

⭐ MY TAKE: Easily a top-three character in the game. Wes might be the face of The Grid, but he’s far from being the basic beginner character people might assume him to be.

20 characters. Countless ways to play. Let’s break them all down.

Here is an early development video from Midway Games showcasing an arena mockup evolving from bare-bones geometry to textured environments, all the way through the final touches that brought it to life for gameplay!
.
This level would ultimately become “Gladiator.” Seeing the development process from its earliest stages to the finished arena is such a cool look behind the scenes of The Grid!

This Friday on @thesaucetalkpodcast we have @youngsaibot (Johnny Tobias Jr.) on the show! Johnny is a friend of mine and the son of Mortal Kombat co-creator John Tobias, growing up as part of the family behind one of the most important video game franchises in history.
.
Johnny and I met years ago through the crazy Grid parties I throw at my place, and we’ve been cool ever since. I wanted to have Johnny on the show to get his perspective on what it was like growing up as the son of a legend and to hear about his experiences growing up alongside the legacy of Mortal Kombat. Most importantly, I wanted to get to know Johnny a little more personally and let you all do the same.
.
We had an absolute blast recording this one, and I’m VERY excited to finally release this episode for you all!
