Erin, known on Instagram as @alt_audhd is an AuDHD creator, antenatal educator, and mother of two AuDHD daughters aged 10 and 13. Diagnosed with autism and ADHD at 45, she describes the experience as “life changing.” She is currently training to deliver courses for NHS staff to better support neurodivergent people navigating pregnancy and birth.

Erin sought assessment after her daughters were diagnosed. She says her diagnosis helped them accept and normalise their neurodivergence, while also helping her accept herself. For years she had been labelled “impatient,” “difficult,” and “argumentative,” and as a child was called “bossy.” Understanding how her brain works, she says, has been healing.

Before diagnosis, she found socialising difficult and struggled to maintain friendships. She now understands she has “situational friendships” that fade when circumstances change, and recognises ADHD-related challenges such as rejection sensitive dysphoria, oversharing, and analysing. She explains that understanding she is autistic has helped both her and her husband understand her motivations, and that they are not intentionally stubborn or difficult.

Looking back, Erin wishes she had understood her neurodivergence sooner. She worked as a database administrator and later as a performance and statistics manager. She believes she was not a great people manager, as she fixated on small details and became frustrated when tasks were done “the wrong way” or too slowly.

Her journey has also been shaped by her own experience using maternity services as a neurodivergent person. As an antenatal educator, Erin understands how challenging medical appointments can be, from sensory overwhelm in hospitals to the difficulty of self-advocacy in unfamiliar settings. These experiences now inform the courses she is training to deliver to NHS staff.

When asked what practical changes she would like to see in maternity services, Erin highlights three key areas: education about what falls under the neurodivergent umbrella; simple accommodations that do not have to be huge; and treating the person in front of you with respect and empathy.
