Among giants today learning, collaborating at the Teaching Black History retreat @centerfork12blackhistory w/ @dr.lagarrett_king @theblkcabinet @ishx19….One of the most powerful takeaways was taking a deep dive into Black Historical Consciousness. It wasn’t presented as another framework to add to my toolkit—it was an invitation to rethink the purpose of history education itself. How do we help students develop agency? How do we honor Black humanity, resistance, emotionality, and futurism while teaching rigorous historical inquiry? As a curriculum designer and educator, I left with a renewed commitment to creating learning experiences that don’t ask students to memorize history, but to wrestle with it, connect it to their own lives, and imagine more just futures. That’s the kind of professional learning that stays with you long after the retreat ends. by @altairedconsult

UGH-cut off at end but u get the idea….For too long, “controversial” has been used as an excuse to keep students from engaging with REAL histories.Nat Turner, The Fires of Jubilee, Reconstruction, Palestine, Japanese incarceration, Indigenous resistance—the list goes on.Students are capable of analyzing complexity when we give them the tools.Our responsibility isn’t to sanitize history or create untouchable heroes. It’s to provide evidence, context, multiple perspectives, and space for thoughtful inquiry.That’s what real historical thinking looks like. by @altairedconsult
