We’re beyond excited to announce the 2026 Nick Oza Visual Fellow: Gabriela Campos 📸✨

After receiving an incredible number of applications from visual storytellers across Arizona, New Mexico, and the Southwest, selecting this year’s fellow was no easy task. The level of artistry, vision, and commitment made this one of our most competitive decisions yet.

Gabriela stood out.

A Santa Fe–born photojournalist, Gabriela’s work captures culture, community, and tradition across the Southwest with striking intimacy. As a staff photojournalist for The Santa Fe New Mexican (@sfnewmexican), her work spans daily news and long-form storytelling and has been featured in The New York Times (@nytimes), The LA Times (@latimes), The Guardian, (@guardian) and more. Her photographs are also part of permanent collections at institutions like the Smithsonian (@smithsonian).

Her images don’t just document, they honor, preserve, and tell stories that matter.

A team of editors, reporters and our Community Journalist Fellow, Stephanie Casanova (@casanovareports), reported on the realities of immigration detention through three stories that look at family separation, access to medical care, and an LGBTQ+ migrant who now supports others navigating the system.

They also created a guide for families in Arizona, "What to do when someone you love is detained by ICE" in partnership with Somos Tucson (@somostucson) and CALÓ News Arizona (@calonewsaz), through the Community Journalists Fellowship from Altavoz Lab, to connect Arizona families with information and resources.

Cuando una persona es detenida por las autoridades de inmigración, sus seres queridos no deberían batallar —encima de todo— para encontrar información precisa sobre la ubicación de su familiar y los pasos del proceso legal.

Por eso creamos “Guía migratoria: Del encuentro con ICE a la detención en Arizona”, un producto bilingüe reporteado por la periodista Stephanie Casanova y editado por Joanna Jacobo Rivera, de CALÓ News Arizona, y Liliana López Ruelas, de Somos Tucson.

La guía incluye nueve capítulos con información sobre cómo localizar a una persona detenida, reglas para las visitas, consejos para encontrar representación legal y recursos comunitarios, entre otros aspectos del proceso de detención en Eloy y Florence.

Altavoz Lab Community Journalism Fellow Stephanie Casanova (@casanovareports), alongside Joanna Jacobo Rivera (@joajacobo) of Caló News AZ (@calonewsaz) and Liliana López Ruelas (@lilianalopezruelas) of Somos Tucson (@somostucson), turned reporting into a practical resource for families navigating the system.

Acompáñanos en la presentación de una guía creada por la periodista Stephanie Casanova (@casanovareports) en conjunto con Caló News (@calonewsaz) y Somos Tucson (@somostucson) para familias con seres queridos detenidos en los Centros de Detención de Inmigrantes de Eloy o Florence. Un recurso que nació de escuchar a quienes viven de cerca el sistema de detención migratoria y de la necesidad de hacer que información esencial sea más accesible.
