It might be super hot outside, but we’re very much open for business this evening from 5–8pm and looking forward to welcoming you in.

We’ll have cold beers, chilled wine and a cool space to escape the heat, so if you’re out and about in the city, pop in, cool down, and spend some time with us and Marina Inoue, who will be with us for the evening.

‘In a Lonely Place’ opens tonight, 5–8pm at Shug Gallery, 12 Lower Goat Lane, Norwich.

All works are online and available for purchase (link in bio)

IN A LONELY PLACE: Opening at @shug.gallery in Norwich Friday June 26th 2026, running through July 17th.

“... This body of work was the second round of paintings I’d made, originally meant to be shown in Los Angeles in the fall of 2025. The first group of paintings I’d done ended up feeling disjointed, like looking at my reflection, scrambling to figure myself out as a person now living in a different country. I said, fuck this I want to make AMERICAN paintings to be shown in AMERICA. I wanted guns and fire and women and cars and sex. I wanted a pink fever dream of rose-colored glasses and power and fear. And I knew, despite my own alarming newfound homesickness, that America has always been a white picket fence rotting from the inside out. The dream is a farce, ridiculous at best and brutally violent at worst. It is built on the back of slavery and genocide under the fantasy of manifest destiny, in which, you too can bootstrap yourself into an aspirational middle class. Preferably if you’re white, ideally a man, and only want to fuck straight. The power of that dream is not in its truth, but in its ruthless persistence, and it survives because it continually reinvents itself through nostalgia, mine, yours, the broader cultural zeitgeist, whatever. I became possessed by my own vision of how I wanted to remember home, the idea of home. I went through archives of photos from a golden age that never existed, I dug through hundreds and hundreds of photos in boxes, snapshots of someone else’s memories, I pulled pictures out of my own collection of found pictures from over the years. I put together a representation of what missing America feels like to me: familiar in some ways, but bruised, weird and crashed out. Nostalgia as a sickness...”

There are thirteen works in total, all oil on canvas. They are in custom, handmade hardwood frames that I constructed with the help of Hoagy Dunnell and Graham Sayle.

All work will be available to purchase through Shug Gallery- please send any full catalogue requests/inquries to them.

In addition, there will be a publication to accompany the show, published by New Dimension (@newdimension). by @alternativemorality
