After the Comic Code Authority (CCA) stepped in and tried to self-regulate comics in the 1950s, they unintentionally created a comic book counter culture. Underground comics were gritty, anti-establishment publications sold in headshops... they featured lurid art and their favorite subject was parodying mainstream culture.

The CCA was no joke, it was artistic censorship at it's finest, using hysteria that violence in comics were corrupting children as the means to earn widespread support.

However, underground comic book scene which really included any independent artist that wasn't affiliated with Disney, Looney Tunes, Archie, Marvel or DC and created content geared towards adults - but it was risky, underground comics that violated the CCA was at risk of obscenity laws or worse.

So what happened? They wanted to tear down the system so they went after Mickey Mouse. Here's a few selects of our faves - including Mickey Rat, which we reference in our most recent episode on comics featuring @Ke@kevineastmantmnt

The first sync for comics starts with the distribution of the earliest forms of manga (Japanese comics) as woodblock prints across Japan and around the world. The items were inexpensively produced and popular around the world - including Europe.

European artists like Degas, Van Gogh and Toulouse-Lautrec - who revolutionized the art of making posters by borrowing Japanese woodcut compositional devices. Even though Japan had self-imposed isolation, restricting foreigners from visiting up until the 19th century the influence of Japanese art and technique spread.

There isn't a lot documented about the direct correlation between Japanese manga and the earliest European comic strip produced by Swiss school teacher, Rudolph Topffer, but a link can be inferred based on the popularity of Japanese art and the influence.

So our first sync is the one that gets the ball rolling... the seed that planted the idea for Western comics.

There's so much more to comics than the Marvel Cinematic Universe #mcu and it starts in the 12th century in Japan.

Yep... you heard right. Japan has a rich cultural history with comics, referred to as "manga", and one of the earliest syncs is the work of Katsushika Hokusai, which became a popular tourist souvenir across Japan and the Globe. This predates the most popular Western comic strips that may have gone supernova in the mid 19th century.

There's always a back story to some of the biggest sites on the Internet. Facebook didn't exactly begin as "Hot or Not", it was a site called "FaceMash" and it was similar to "Hot or Not" except it was for Harvard students.
Hey, even YouTube has a similar story launching as a video dating platform that awarded women $100 for uploading a video.

In 2021, how has skateboarding flipped its white male image and still stayed true as a rebellious alternative to mainstream sport?

According to APR's latest guest, Olympian @nnieguglia, it's diversity.

The difference with skateboarding is that it's an individual sport - so anyone, anywhere can join in at anytime.

And, yes, while skateboarding’s ethos is defined, in some ways, by resistance to authority - it inherently is a suited for all skaters. But, not all skaters will have the same experience.

Even though the first professional skateboarder was 60s Patty McGee, women have generally been excluded from the sport. There was a time when X-Games only televised the male finals from the sport, brands weren't sponsoring female athletes and parks weren't always a welcoming space for female skaters.

With Skateboarding making its mainstream debut at the Olympics this year, it's time for brands and skate corps to try and not lose its rebellious past to help further the sport and support the growth of diversity.

Diversity is an evolution, and now that it's here, we can't sell it out.

New Episode out now with @Jordan Alexander!

Before the 60s, pop culture alluded to but masked the existence of LGBTQ+ communities. So saying 'Homosexual' in 1964's Hollywood political drama "The Best Man" (starring Henry Fonda) was a riské but a pivotal cultural turning point for the masses!

Gore Vidal, wrote the screenplay, which makes this film really interesting. Vidal was openly bisexual and he was known for interrogating the social and cultural sexual norms that he perceived were driving American life through his works.

"The Best Man" was the first film of its kind that was bold enough to not only say the word 'homosexual' it also showed how sexuality was weaponized to attack another person's character. Ironically, Vidal was a vocal advocate that homosexuality, and sexuality in general, signified nothing whatsoever about anyone as a person - in particular moral character. So this film is a double edged sword - one hand it re-introduced the existence of homosexuality broadly to audiences, but it also positioned it really badly to people for the first time who may have left theatres thinking it was minimized as a character flaw.

Now we watch a film like this and realize that it shows how immoral politics are more so than how immoral same-sex relations are.

Regardless, it was a point in our pop culture history where homosexuality made the leap into the mainstream. But, whether it was a good or bad thing is up to you!
