Тщыгъупщакъым, тщыгъупщэнукъым.

Today, May 21st, is the Circassian Memorial Day, marking 162 years since the genocide of my nation.

I want to help raise wider international recognition and bring more attention to the importance of this day, as it truly means a lot to me when someone outside the Circassian diaspora takes interest in my people’s heritage.

For over a century, the Russian Empire carried out systematic ethnic cleansing against the Circassian people, killing and forcibly displacing more than 90% of the population. This ultimately led to the fall of Circassia and its annexation by the Russian Empire.

Today, up to 4 million Circassians are scattered all over the world, carrying the pain of losing our homeland. While only a small percentage of our people remain on our historical land, our nation still experiences the loss of national self-consciousness, both from outside pressures and from within the community itself. That is why it is crucial to take action in preserving our national identity and resisting assimilation.

It is important to remember. It is important to share. taken in Circassia by @aluborman
