What does it take to make better decisions and investments in Africa’s wildlife economies?

Wildlife economies have the potential to contribute to conservation, sustainable growth and livelihoods across the continent. But unlocking this potential requires better information, stronger analysis and practical tools to guide decision-making.

On 3 November 2026, @aluconservation, @africanwildlifefoundation and @conservationstrategyfund will launch the Wildlife Economy Decision and Investment Support Toolkit.

Join us as we explore what the Toolkit offers, how it works and how it can support governments, investors, development partners and conservation practitioners across Africa.

Africa’s marine life won’t be protected by people who’ve only studied them from a distance.

That’s why, we took our Marine Conservation Professional Development Course cohort to Kilwa, on Tanzania’s southern coast, for an eight-day immersive experience with Action For Ocean, and the coastal communities who manage these waters every day.

The programme covered three dimensions of marine conservation:

Ecology: Participants trained for their PADI Open Water certification, then planted coral fragments towards a 1,000-fragment restoration target and learned nursery-to-reef transplanting, survival monitoring and baseline data collection.

Governance: They met the leadership of the SOMAKI Collaborative Fisheries Management Area to discuss co-management and zoning, farmed seaweed alongside local farmers, visited an octopus closure site, joined a community patrol as observers, and sat in on a Kilwa Beach Management Unit (BMU) Network meeting where community data shapes management decisions.

Finance: They tackled the question “How can conservation pay for itself?” through AFO’s 3C Model, explored coastal savings groups, and worked through cost-per-impact measures such as cost per surviving coral fragment, hectares under co-management and households reached.

The week ended at Kilwa Kisiwani, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, followed by participant presentations on how they’ll apply what they learned in their own work.

At the ALU School of Wildlife Conservation, we believe conservation leaders need more than theory. They need the skills to work alongside communities and build approaches that last.

Thanks to Action For Ocean and the Kilwa communities for hosting us and sharing your knowledge.

A year of learning, research, leadership, and action. That was 2025 at SOWC.

We took conservation learning beyond the classroom.
We brought new ideas and research into the conversation.
We connected leaders, practitioners, students, and partners across the continent.
And we continued building a community now reaching 40+ countries.

From protected-area management and executive education to the wildlife economy, field-based learning, research, and new partnerships, our work continued to grow in both scale and ambition.

So, what did the year actually look like? Our 2025 Annual Report has the full picture.

Take a look at what we worked on, what we learned, who we reached, and what we’re building towards next.

Taking conservation beyond the classroom!

Last week, 38 undergraduate students visited the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund in Kinigi, Musanze, for an immersive learning experience at the heart of gorilla conservation.

From exploring the Conservation Gallery and learning about Dian Fossey’s legacy to discovering mountain gorilla behaviour, feeding ecology, and the rich biodiversity of the Virunga landscape, students gained firsthand insights into the science and impact of wildlife conservation.

The visit was a powerful reminder that protecting Africa’s wildlife starts with understanding the ecosystems they depend on and empowering the next generation of conservation leaders.

Southern Africa is rich in biological resources. But how much of that value stays in the region?

Currently, Africa derives less than 10% of the value of its biomass.

That represents a major opportunity to shift from exporting raw and low-value resources towards building higher-value industries, jobs and economic resilience.

🆕 New research from @NatureFinance, with support from @African Climate Foundation, @The Nature Conservancy, @The African Leadership University and @auctusESG, explores how a coordinated bioeconomy strategy could help the Southern African Development Community turn its biological wealth into a competitive advantage.

The report identifies opportunities across six areas - from agriculture and biotechnology to bioenergy, the blue economy, circularity and biodiversity-based industries.

But capturing more of this value will require regional action: aligning policy, pooling finance and expertise, strengthening cross-border value chains and investing in shared infrastructure.

The ALU SOWC is excited to announce the publication of the State of the Wildlife Economy in the Democratic Republic of Congo report.

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is home to more than half of Africa’s largest tropical rainforest and is the continent’s most biologically diverse country. But how much of this rich biodiversity is translating into opportunities for people?

Wildlife resources provide food, energy, building materials and income to millions of Congolese, while also creating opportunities for ecotourism, carbon finance and fisheries. In 2017, Virunga National Park alone generated approximately USD 4 million in tourism revenue from 8,000 visitors, showing the economic importance of protected areas and wildlife.

Much of the DRC’s wildlife economy, however, remains informal, and its potential is constrained by habitat degradation, illegal logging, civil unrest, mining and other pressures on biodiversity.

Unlocking and sustainably growing the wildlife economy in DRC could provide numerous opportunities for livelihoods, development, economic growth and biodiversity conservation.

What happens when the classroom becomes a conservancy? 🌍🇰🇪

At Laikipia Field School, 40 ALU and ALCHE students experienced conservation beyond the classroom; exploring wildlife, communities, tourism, livelihoods, and the realities of protecting nature. But perhaps the biggest lesson was the shift from wildlife conservation to the business of conservation.

When people and communities have a real stake in protecting nature, conservation can become more than a responsibility. It can become an opportunity to create value, sustain livelihoods, and protect our environment for generations to come.

Watch the documentary and experience Laikipia through our students’ eyes.

Enkop Enaipirr — The Land That Teaches

For ten days, Laikipia became a classroom without walls for our ALU students—immersing them in the realities of conservation, from communities and wildlife to tourism and the business of conservation.

They came to learn. They left seeing conservation differently.

What does conservation look like beyond the classroom?

Our students with conservation mission stepped into the field at Umusambi Village to explore the realities of managing conservation in an urban landscape.

From wetland restoration and the rescue of the endangered Grey Crowned Crane, students examined how conservation decisions are made using ecological evidence, and the complexities that come with balancing wildlife, people, policy, and sustainability.

The visit also raised a bigger question: How do we know conservation is actually working?

By looking beyond interventions to outcomes and impact, students are learning to think critically about what it takes to restore habitats, protect species, engage communities, and build conservation models that can endure.

Because conservation leadership isn’t just about understanding wildlife. It’s about understanding the systems that shape its future.
