Five years in the making, Joanna Natasegaraโ€™s extraordinary film THE DISCIPLE: A WU-TANG FABLE was finally released into the world on Netflix last week. An intimate, fascinating story of fandom, mentorship, obsession and the price of making art, tracing how an outsider from the Netherlands found his way into the Wu-Tang Clan and helped create one of the most mythologised albums in hip-hop history. Film4 is proud to have supported director Joanna Natasegara (@joanna_film) and producers Abigail Anketell-Jones (@abigail_anketell), Lauren Dark (@lauren.dark) and Vanessa Kirby (@vanessa__kirby)on their film The Disciple: A Wu Tang Fable. The film premiered at Sundance earlier this year and went onto play at Telluride in September, followed by a homecoming screening in New York with RZA, hosted by Barry Jenkins. Throughout music history, few albums have achieved the mythical status of the Wu-Tang Clanโ€™s Once Upon a Time in Shaolin, a 31-track double album packaged in an ornate, handcrafted silver box. Director Joanna Natasegara unmasks the decades-long story of Dutch Moroccan rapper and producer Cilvaringz, who became the unlikeliest of disciples to his childhood heroes. The result of his relentless grit and determination culminated in one of the most controversial artifacts of our time, sparking discussions about the convergence of art, technology, and ownership. Studio Gebbia & Film4 present The Disciple, an Aluna Entertainment and Violet Films production, in association with 36 Cinema. The film is directed and produced by Joanna Natasegara. Producers are Abigail Anketell-Jones, Lauren Dark and Vanessa Kirby. Executive producers include The RZA, Joe Gebbia, Jason Ropell and Abazar Khayami. The film is available to watch now on Netflix. by @alunaentertainment
