sometimes i do wonder what exactly a midlife british photographer is doing in austria

apart from mispronouncing things
collecting paperwork
being overconfident about understanding dialect
and carrying a camera everywhere like it explains my entire personality

but somewhere along the way this became home

not in a neat cinematic way

more in a lived-in way

familiar streets
strange light
mountains that still make me shut up for a second
ordinary corners i’ve photographed more times than necessary
and a creative life i did not start building until after 50

so maybe that’s the answer

i’m here noticing things

badly pronouncing them occasionally

and photographing the life i somehow ended up inside
and which i wouldn’t change for the world 🇦🇹

you’ve been warned

this account isn’t trying to be for everyone

if you’re looking for perfect photos, polished success or someone pretending they’ve got it all figured out you’ll probably be disappointed

this is where i share the messy middle

the mistakes
the wins
the lessons
the scams i fell for
the jobs i should never have taken
the moments i almost gave up
and the photos that remind me why i keep going

because carrying a camera was never really the point

it was learning to see differently
to start over
and to prove that life doesn’t stop at 50

if that’s not your thing it’s completely okay to unfollow

but if you’re building a new chapter one imperfect step at a time you’re exactly where you belong

if you’re thinking “yep that’s me” — let’s be friends ♥️

apparently photographers are supposed to choose a niche

one subject
one style
one immediately recognisable thing

meanwhile my camera roll contains portraits

lakes
insects
portraits of my favourite people
storms
the streets of vienna
the moon
blurred experiments

and quite a lot of things i cannot explain

learning photography later in life has made me less interested in following every rule correctly

i have already spent enough of my life trying to be consistent

midlife creativity gives me somewhere to change my mind

try something new
make a mess

and photograph whatever the heck makes me look twice

my professional photography has a clear direction

but my personal photography does not need to become a filing system

sometimes curiosity is enough

what would your camera roll say your photography niche is? or isn’t? 🤣

with grateful thanks to @r_vanhal who takes the beta photos of me ever taken ♥️

**what if your brand's most original idea is over 100 years old?**

when rax bräu, an organic brewery in the lower austrian alps, started out, they designed their own logo and beer labels

but as the brewery grew and new beers joined the range, they needed more than individual labels they needed a recognisable brand identity

and the inspiration was already there, more than a century old

in the late 19th/early 20th century, the rax region became a popular summer escape for viennese holidaymakers, known as *sommerfrische*, these mountain retreats inspired an entire visual culture of illustrated postcards and travel advertising

roland saw an opportunity to connect rax bräu's identity with the history of the place it calls home

drawing on the distinctive aesthetics of the era, he developed illustrations inspired by historic postcards featuring real local landmarks: the rax cable car, the habsburghaus, the church in prein and the summit cross on jakobskogel

the result? a cohesive visual identity that connects the brewery's growing range of beers through a shared story, while giving each label its own character

**because distinctive branding doesn't always mean inventing something new, sometimes it means rediscovering something worth telling**

that's how we approach branding at ugly duckling agency

we look beyond logos, colours and trends to understand the story behind a business — and find a way to make it meaningful to the people who matter

**your brand already has a story, are you making the most of it? let’s talk about your story**

there’s a difference between “i don’t want to” and “i’m worried about getting it wrong”

only you know which one is choosing your camera settings

a walk without a brief or a client waiting is a good place to experiment

you might need a refresher
you might surprise yourself

neither requires you to decide whether you’re a “proper photographer” before you begin

and the choice … manual or automatic is 100% yours
start when you’re ready ♥️

this is your sign to photograph in a way that 💯 suits you right now

drop a 💯 if you agree

you don’t have to turn every photograph into a test of your competence

a walk with no brief and no client waiting is a good place to experiment

change a setting

look at the result

change it again

learning photography in midlife can include revisiting things you already knew, rather than assuming you need to start from scratch

learning photography in midlife? you’re not starting from zero

you’ll still have camera skills to learn

but you already know how to listen, notice details and adapt to what matters to someone

those aren’t camera settings, but they matter when you photograph people

when i started building my photography business in my 50s, i realised i could bring those skills with me

during a headshot session with tomas, it mattered to him that his hands were in focus because he communicates in sign language

so i alternated between headshots and frames where his hands were clear too

we made some lovely photographs and had a great morning together

what skill from your life outside photography helps you behind the camera?

using a vintage lens doesn’t make a photograph more meaningful by itself

i used to treat lens flare as proof that i’d pointed the camera the wrong way

with this takumar, the light leaks and the colours shift

i don’t want that look in every photograph, but when it serves the feeling, i keep it

for me, the useful question isn’t only “is this technically perfect?” but “does this feel right for this photograph?”

i don’t think black and white is the problem

the useful question is why i reach for it

because it serves the photograph?
or because it makes me feel safer in it?

photography over 50 is teaching me to notice the difference

what helps you recognise yourself in a photograph?

i once read that women over 50 can go beige or go loud

photography over 50 is teaching me to take up more space, not less

and in my photos, that means choosing full colour

not because black and white is wrong
but because i’m done treating my natural colour as something to correct

what helps you recognise yourself in a photograph?
