Psychology tops this list at 47.4%, but studies show depression and anxiety rates have increased across nearly every major over the past decade. According to national college health surveys, more than 40% of college students report feeling so depressed it’s difficult to function at some point during the academic year. Majors centered around mental health, caregiving, and helping professions often report some of the highest rates of emotional exhaustion and stress.

While workload plays a role, factors like career uncertainty, financial pressure, clinical requirements, and emotional labor can have an even bigger impact on student well-being. Psychology, Counseling, Social Work, and Nursing students frequently balance demanding coursework with emotionally challenging subject matter.

Does your major belong on this list, or is another major even more stressful? 👇
