New Omakase Takeout concept from a Nobu trained chef. Noticeably higher quality than the boxes at the Japanese market, plus fancy touches like truffle aioli and wasabi yuzu. Even the soy sauce is made in house! And they still have the fruit and egg sandos that the previous place was famous for

What's an actor from Boston know about Mexican food? I don't know, but I sure didn't expect a restaurant with "cantina" in the name to have lobster risotto and a $69 ribeye. Tbf there's a more reasonably priced lunch section with Mexican standards and they def got on my good side with complimentary chips, salsa, QUESO and a guava Margarita. The El Chapo pork chop was on the sweet side with the hot honey glaze and apple chutney (easily scraped off) but otherwise good, as was the salmon burrito bowl

Beard Papa's, which started in Japan over 25 years ago, is back in town and their classic cream puffs are good as ever. Limited flavors and fillings for now but you can't go wrong with the "real vanilla beans" vanilla

New combo calzone just dropped at Costco! First bite felt distinctly familiar, and I realized it was because it uses the same crust as the chicken bake. The portion is big (a lot of it is crust) and filling is very generous with the protein, but needed a lot more cheese to get the inside-out pizza vibe that a good calzone should have. Still tasty tho, and hopefully a precursor to the return of the combo slice

HINAR in East Village is one of my fav dessert cafes and their Scripps Ranch location has finally opened. The vibes and food were 💯 as expected. The black sesame cake was pretty unique, but the basque cheesecake and banana pudding were tops today

Freshly opened HFS! Now instead of waiting 45 minutes in Sorrento Valley, you can wait 45 minutes in Poway! J/K, the line actually wasn't bad at all. The fish and wonton chips on the poke nachos were fresh as always and multiple people in line said they travel for the Wednesday special Alahao flavor (it was bomb too)

Grand Opening of San Diego County's first Amazon Fresh. Went out of curiosity, but....it's a grocery store lol
1. Swag was kinda weak considering the size of the company. It was basically just Amazon branded hand towels, and they ran out by noon.
2. It's nice to have a salad bar and hot food section plus a variety of refrigerated meals. Prices are reasonable with good discounts for prime members.
3. The "smart" Dash Carts are a cool concept but buggy and in short supply. We had to wait a while for one, and it made mistakes.

I've been here a million times without documenting for social media, but now that they're yelp's #3 best cheeseburger in the US, I guess it's time. These "dirty flat top" burgers look simple but are perfectly executed, deceptively flavorful with their butter braised onions, garlic aioli, smashed patties and cheese, and taste amazing. The dated, dingy burger-joint-in-a-questionable-part-of-town vibe is intentional, even for the convoy location that only opened last year. Last time I went it was funny to see a nice suburban family with a young daughter in private school uniform enjoying their meal with uncensored hip-hop blasting in the background.
Bougie filet-o-fish's have become a thing recently in LA, but The Friendly's been doing it for a while and their version might be the best (smoked trout roe, cream cheese, and gremolata aioli). A Friendly burger, filet-o-fish, and rings is one of my top go-to lunches. Be aware that different locations have different menus

New authentic Italian sandwich shop in downtown. Hard to believe they make their own focaccia in that little space, but the quality definitely shows. This family-run spot is doing it right - thoughtfully constructed, perfectly balanced sandos that aren't overstuffed in an attempt to go viral (and I mean that in the best way). The Roma (Prosciutto, fresh mozzarella, basil pesto, arugula, tomato, evoo, balsamic vinegar, salt & pepper ) and the Lucca (Slices cured beef bresaola, stracciatella, tartufata, parmesano, arugula, truffle oil) were both bomb

The only place to get Cincinnati chili in SD! A lot of unique regional dishes go viral and are easily found in big cities - apparently this isn't one of them. While Skyline Chili is the most famous, some say this version's better because it's thicker and more flavorful. Despite the word "chili," I'd think of it more as a spaghetti and meat sauce with a Greek twist, with hints of cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, and of course lots of cheese. It's a love-it-or-hate-it dish but I enjoyed it and am glad someone's serving it in town
PS Love that they have the authentic Skyline hot sauce!
