📍Mont Bar ⭐️

A few weeks ago I wanted to treat myself after finishing my Spanish course, and what better way of doing that than having a tasting menu at a Michelin star restaurant by yourself?!

First thing I noticed walking in is that the music is quite loud, and it’s fun and uptempo. This immediately makes the whole vibe a lot less formal, which I love.

The service is super friendly, but in the first 5 minutes I did have 4 different people at my table which was a bit overwhelming. The owner welcomes every table and chats with them for a bit. What I also noticed is that the staff seems to like him, which is a very good and important sign to me! Working at any restaurant - but in particular these kinds - can be very intense, hard work and super stressful, so I’m always happy when the staff gets along and they seem to enjoy their job.

I got to taste every single dish on the menu 😍. The photos here aren’t even all the courses; on the last photo you see an overview of all the dishes! The bites were small but all so flavorful. They all came around 3 minutes after each other. At times this pace felt a little bit fast, because sometimes you just want to enjoy the taste of the dish a little bit longer. But overall it was good, because the bites were very small.

What also stood out to me were the plates! They were gorgeous. I asked one of the waiters if they were specifically made for them, but I don’t think she understood my question haha. So I’m still wondering!!

If I have to be critical (I know that nobody’s asking me to be): the bar stool was very uncomfortable after a while, and the temperature was quite low.

But overall this was an amazing experience. I’m usually not a big fan of restaurants with one ⭐️, but this was beyond my expectations. Usually I think that restaurants that receive their first star become boring, because they’re way less experimental and very cautious. However, the opposite is true here! Although they did have 3 courses with caviar, which felt very excessive to me. Sure, it’s a crowd pleaser, but 3 courses?

Anyhow, go to Mont Bar! Barcelona is around the corner anyways.

📍 El Xampanyet

This is a very busy place, so there’s long queues always. However, if you’re okay to stand you’ll be “seated” right away, so that’s what we did! We had to stand at the counter, but I love that vibe. The atmosphere is typically Spanish. It’s completely packed, people are talking loudly and they ring a bell every time someone leaves a tip.

It’s a touristy area, so the prices were a bit higher than at other places. But still very good prices. They serve a cava for like 3 euros per glass 🥹

The food was good too! We didn’t have anything besides these dishes, but it was very tasty!

All in all, mainly because of the atmosphere, definitely worth a visit!

📍 Bar Cugat

Another unexpected find in my neighborhood! I don’t think it’s very known by tourists, because I always feel like I’m surrounded by locals. Or at least everybody speaks Spanish! 💃🏽 It’s definitely known by them though, because it’s always super busy. It has a real buurtcafé vibe.

I love Bar Cugat so much, it’s definitely in my top 3 restaurants in Barcelona. I haven’t eaten here very extensively yet, but it’s perfect for my afternoon vermouth & snacks ritual.

The interior is amazing, it’s simple and classic but so beautiful. The high ceilings really make the place very interesting. If your identity, like mine, is entirely made up of living in your little Amsterdam bubble and being Havermelkelite - then you might want to compare this spot to Binnenvisser.

Their menu is definitely interesting too; at first I didn’t really know what to make of it, because it kind of goes in a lot of different directions. That’s why I asked for some recommendations! I wanted to try out some new stuff that I hadn’t eaten before yet, but the girl recommended the oxtail croquettes to me. Little did she know I had already eaten 3716 croquettes since the day I got to Barcelona. Of course, however, as a people pleaser always trying to please the people, I ordered them anyways. Not a bad decision though!!! They were super nice. I hadn’t seen them made in this way before. The outside was super crispy and they were not being cheap on the oxtail.

The sandwich was a brioche with calamaris, and both were super crispy. It was one of my favorite things I’ve eaten here so far. I might even want to argue that it was better than the one I had at Cañete.

I also ordered a bao bun with crispy avocado, which didn’t make it on to the photo. That one was an absolute no from me though. However, I blame me and not them. I should have known better. But, it’s an interesting thing to have on your menu as a vegetarian option.

The food also arrived super fast (probably because I was there at 19:15 and no Spanish person eats at that time; I was the only person eating in the whole, fully packed, restaurant haha)

📍 Betlem

This was an unexpected find in my neighborhood, and I’m so happy I found it! So far I found it difficult to find a nice and relaxing terrace in Barcelona, because you’re always surrounded by either millions of tourists or traffic. But Betlem’s terrace is so nice! It has sun all afternoon, it’s lively but quiet and cars don’t really drive here. ☀️

Their food is super nice. Their standard menu has all the classic tapas and they have plenty of dishes outside of their menu which are more experimental and bigger plates.

I always go classic when I’m here, and it’s amazing. The croquettes are home made and super tasty. The bread with tomato is the best I’ve yet tasted in Barcelona. Sounds super simple, but it’s an art and there’s definitely differences in quality.

The only downside is that sometimes it takes a bit before you can order, because it seems there’s only one person doing all the tables.

📍 Cañete

Cañete is definitely my favorite restaurant in Barcelona, and I think many people would agree with me. Initially I was scared that it might be overhyped, but it’s not at all. I’ve been there 3 times now, and believe me, they never disappoint.

Huge downside to this though: it’s impossible to make a reservation. However, if you go late at night (around 21:30) and you’re willing to wait they’ll have a table for you for sure. Make sure they seat you at the bar though, because that’s where the magic happens. You get to watch what’s going on in the kitchen, and I could personally watch that for hours.

Going to Cañete is like going to theatre. It feels like there’s about 30 people in the kitchen and they’re constantly shouting to each other - in a fun way 😛. It’s organized chaos at its best.

The staff is so incredibly helpful and they’re super involved in your evening (so don’t go there if you need to have very personal conversations). They’re super fast and they will not forget about you for even one second.

They have quite an extensive menu and the food is incredible. It’s classic tapas but with a modern and experimental twist. Honestly that’s all I have to say about it, no complaints at all. That’s a first.

Well maybe they could turn the lights down a bit, but I love Cañete so much that even that doesn’t bother me.

📍 Mini Pepita

La Pepita’s little sister! Just a few doors down. Both apparently very popular, because there were lines in front of both of them. We arrived at around 21:45 without a reservation, and were seated about 20 minutes later. ✨Vibe wise✨ we compared it to Bar Brutal, but more affordable and a bit more relaxed! I’d say the restaurant is vibrant, alternative and affordable. Perfect spot for a date.

The interior is really cool, with writing by guests all over the wall. If you now think to yourself: interesting, where have I seen this before? - Yes, you’ve seen this at La Cubanita. But at Mini Pepita it’s somehow way more tasteful, could be because there are way less drawings of d*cks!

The lighting here is very bright, but somehow it doesn’t bother me here. They make good use of different colors of light, which adds to the lively vibe of the restaurant.

Then on to the food! You don’t want to go here if you’re craving traditional tapas, because they’re a little bit more international than that. We went for the seabass ceviche, steak tartar, calamares and beef with chimichurri.

The steak tartar was minced instead of cut, which is a bit of a pet peeve of mine. Don’t be lazy and just cut the meat! 🔪😡 Taste wise it was good, just a bit too acid which kind of overshadowed the meat flavors.

The calamares were amazing! Could’ve been fried a bit more, butttt the combination with the kimchi and the kimchi mayo was golden! Something to remember.

Lastly the beef was nice, but no chimichurri taste at allll. Bit of a shame! Would’ve been a gr8 dish if there actually was some chimichurri in it.

All in all we were very happy about the food though. Probably just because of the ambiance of the restaurant, and because the service was also really nice! They give you free shots when you pay the bill 🤑.

Definitely worth a visit.

I feel like this is a favorite of a lot of people, but I wasn’t that big of a fan to be honest! 🤪

We came in without a reservation and we asked for a spot for a drink and a quick bite, to which the camarero replied clearly annoyed “we are a restaurant”.

They don’t have a wine list with wines by the glass, so you just ask them for recommendations. I asked for a full bodied red wine - preferably Italian. Probably not a good thing to say to the Spanish - who so far I think are quite nationalistic. But I was feeling sassy 💁🏽‍♀️. Anyways, he didn’t let me taste the wine and it was medium bodied at the most! Scandalous.

Their food menu was fun! Lots of interesting sounding dishes. They don’t tell you anything about the dishes when they serve it to you though, but so far they don’t do that anywhere so maybe that’s just a very Dutch (or presumably Amsterdam) thing to do? - Although the dishes were interesting, taste wise they weren’t super mindblowing.

Oh AND one of the biggest negatives in my opinion was that you have to scan a qr to look at the menu. Feels very cheap to me. Especially after the ✨we are a restaurant✨ comment.

And lastly! The whole restaurant was full of boxes? I don’t know if that’s to make the vibe more lively and vibrant - because it wasn’t really - but it didn’t work for me. Just felt super messy. At first I thought maybe they don’t have a lot of storage space, but then I found out that they have a massive wine cellar. Soo odd choice to fill up your whole restaurant with messy wine boxes.
