I used to think poets who read from their phones or books were fake poets, because the strength of poetry lies in the memorization of it. At least, that’s what I thought.
Until I was met with an opportunity to perform a poem, and I didn’t memorize any of the ones I would have loved to share. I had to use my phone.
Turns out I’m a fake poet.
Or maybe I’m not.
Because I actually wrote the piece.
And people should give grace to poets who read from their phones.

I attended my first open mic today, I saw shege before I got to the location…traffic and all. When I settled they were asking “who wanted to perform?” Hesitantly I rose my hand when my heart was beating extremely fast. I’m glad I performed. It was such a beautiful space to be in with other wonderful creators thank you @ilana_community for hosting me, I look forward to the next one.
