A bold statement - but one that says a lot about how we experience film.
In an editorial for 695 Quarterly, IATSE Local 695 brought together different perspectives on the role of sound in cinema. Director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, Steve Jobs, Trainspotting) estimated that 70–80% of a movie is sound, while filmmaker Michael Moore (Bowling for Columbine, Fahrenheit 9/11, Sicko) argued that audiences may forgive an imperfect image, but not sound they cannot understand.
But good sound goes beyond intelligibility. Harshness, boominess, muddiness or excessive sibilance can affect the experience, even when the listener cannot identify exactly what feels wrong.
We may not think about frequency response, acoustics or polar patterns while watching a film. But our ears already know what natural sound should feel like.
So when a great recording does its job, the technology disappears, and what remains is the voice, the instrument, the space, the performance, the experience itself.
So, is video mathematically 80% audio? Probably not. But your audience is always listening.

𝗠𝗬𝗧𝗛 #1:The larger the diaphragm, the better the microphone.
Large diaphragms generally offer higher sensitivity and lower self-noise. Smaller diaphragms have lower moving mass, enabling faster response, greater transient precision and more consistent directional and off-axis behavior. Âmago’s proprietary µSDC™ architecture bridges the gap, using 4.1 mm diaphragms in the O35X and 7.1 mm in the C35X/S35X, up to 67% less surface area than a conventional SDC, while achieving just 15-19 dBA self-noise.

𝗠𝗬𝗧𝗛 #2: The capsule determines the sound. The preamp simply makes it louder.
The capsule, impedance conversion and amplification stages all influence bandwidth, dynamic range, phase behavior, noise, distortion and output impedance. Cable capacitance and receiving equipment also interact with the microphone. The Xtended Series™ pairs its µSDC™ capsules with the fastest internal microphone preamplifier ever developed, Âmago’s proprietary Class A, fully DC-coupled design, with 1.5 MHz bandwidth and just 70 Ω output impedance, engineered to preserve the speed, timing and detail captured by the diaphragm.

𝗠𝗬𝗧𝗛 #3: If humans can’t hear beyond 20 kHz, capturing beyond it serves no purpose.
Real sounds contain rapid changes and transients. Extended bandwidth helps a microphone track these changes, preserving leading edges, fine timing and transient detail, particularly with drums, percussion and spatial/immersive recording. Ultrasonic information can also become useful after extreme downpitching or time manipulation, where ultrasonic content above 20 kHz can be shifted into the audible range.
An impulse response reveals how quickly a microphone reacts to a sudden acoustic event and how quickly it settles afterwards, providing a direct view of its transient behavior.
Every Xtended Series™ microphone extends to 35 kHz, while the O35X reaches down to 4 Hz at the opposite end of the spectrum.
The goal isn’t to “hear 35 kHz.” It’s to capture more of the acoustic event.
