Bereaved Mothers, how do you respond to this question?

People ask it so innocently and are likely not prepared for a real & raw response.

I often answer this way, which allows me to name that my living kids are not the full story and gives the opportunity for more dialogue.

Have you ever tried answering like this or something similar?

Infant loss is such a huge struggle in and of itself. Culturally normal questions like this asked so lightly can feel so heavy.

There have been times in my journey when I would just start to cry, times that I just gave the more simple answer of 2 , not naming my babies in spirit.

Sometimes answering honestly brings about beautiful dialogue and story sharing with the stranger, other times it gets awkward real quick and the other person tries to move onto something else quickly.

If you are a bereaved mother, remember that it is ok to answer however you feel called in that moment. If the other person can’t handle it, that is not your burden to bear.

12 years today!!! I cannot believe how swiftly it feels these years have flown by!!!

Moves, and babies and building our life together 🤍

So grateful for our little life together

🌀 yes we created a labyrinth of branches and such on the earth, we each walked in separately and walked out together

Rolls off the tongue so easily, sounds true… I have even said these things before….

But then my first love died at 26.

Then I sat with women who had a baby or child who was dead.

Women who experienced obstetrical r❌pe & violence in their birth.

A mother who was dying of cancer and her son was only 2 years old.

My first baby died.

All of these and more helped me to realize that statements like these actually don’t feel true to me and can actually hurt the people we are trying to console when we use them.

People used them with me when I was in deep grief. Not because they were trying to be mean, but because the person never stopped to feel into how it might feel to hear that if the circumstances were swapped.

What do you think about blanket statements like this?

Things I have done scared:

1. Guest on a podcast for the 1st time.
2. Audition to be in a musical with my children
3. Birth my babies at home
4. Say yes to my husband of 11+ years when he proposed 2 weeks after we met
5. Publish every story and reel on these platforms!!!
6. Create my own podcast
7. Invite women I admire 5+ times to guest on my podcast with zero response
8. Walk El Camino De Santiago in my 20’s
9. Agree to Au pair 3 French girls in Paris without meeting them
10. Host my first women’s circle

Love your wild and precious life! Do the things you dream of now, don’t wait!!!
