JAMES J. CORBETT
1866–1933 “Gentleman Jim”

James John Corbett, better known as “Gentleman Jim,” was one of the fighters who helped usher boxing into the modern era.

Born in San Francisco in 1866, Corbett became famous for a very different style from the rugged bare-knuckle fighters who came before him.

Rather than relying simply on strength and toughness, he used footwork, movement, timing, defence and calculated combinations.

His approach helped establish the more technical style associated with modern boxing.

His place in boxing history was secured on 7 September 1892, when he faced the legendary John L. Sullivan in New Orleans. The fight was contested with gloves under the Marquess of Queensberry rules. Corbett stopped Sullivan in the 21st round, ending Sullivan's reign and becoming heavyweight champion.

That fight represented much more than a change of champion. Sullivan was strongly associated with boxing's bare-knuckle past, while Corbett came to represent a newer, more scientific approach to the sport.

Corbett held the heavyweight title until 1897, when he lost to Bob Fitzsimmons. He later fought another legendary heavyweight, James J. Jeffries, twice.
Outside the ring, Corbett became a successful stage and screen performer, helping make professional fighters into mainstream celebrities. He died in 1933, aged 66.

Old-School Horsehair Boxing Gloves

Before today's multi-layer foam gloves, horsehair was commonly used as padding inside boxing gloves.

During the late 1800s and early 1900s, professional fighters could compete in incredibly small gloves. Two-ounce gloves were used in some bouts, with four-ounce horsehair gloves later becoming commonplace. By 1929, British rules required a minimum of six ounces.

Unlike modern foam, horsehair could move and compress inside the glove, meaning the padding over the knuckles could become much thinner with use. Fighters from the 1960s and 70s still remember competing in six-ounce horsehair gloves.

One of boxing's most famous examples survives from Muhammad Ali (then Cassius Clay) vs Henry Cooper in 1963. Ali's damaged glove split at the seam, exposing the horsehair padding inside.

Horsehair hasn't completely disappeared, it has continued to be used in some professional fight gloves, sometimes alongside modern foam.

Would you fancy fighting in a pair of old-school 4oz horsehair gloves?

JOHN L. SULLIVAN
(The Boston Strong Boy) 1858–1918

John Lawrence Sullivan was one of the most famous fighters of the 19th century and one of the men who helped transform prizefighting into the sport of modern boxing.

Born in Roxbury, Massachusetts, in 1858, Sullivan became known as “The Boston Strong Boy.” A fearsome heavyweight with enormous punching power, he competed during a remarkable period when boxing was moving from bare-knuckle fighting under the London Prize Ring Rules to gloved contests under the Queensberry Rules.

In 1882, Sullivan defeated Paddy Ryan in a bare-knuckle contest to establish himself as America's leading heavyweight. His fame grew far beyond boxing and he became one of America's earliest national sporting celebrities.

His most legendary contest came on 8 July 1889, when he faced Jake Kilrain in Mississippi. The men fought bare-knuckled for an extraordinary 75 rounds, lasting more than two hours, before Kilrain's corner conceded the fight. It became the last heavyweight championship contest fought under the London Prize Ring Rules.

Sullivan's reign finally ended in 1892, when he was defeated by James J. “Gentleman Jim” Corbett in a gloved championship contest. Sullivan retired from top-level competition as boxing entered a new era.

He died on 2 February 1918, aged 59. More than a century later, John L. Sullivan remains an important figure in combat-sports history — a fighter who stood right on the dividing line between old-school bare-knuckle prizefighting and modern professional boxing.

🥊 Welcome to another edition of The Combat Sports Diaries.
Today we're shining the spotlight on Dave Kari AKA Dave Voodoo, a valued member of the combat sports community with a story that's well worth sharing.

👤 I am known as Dave Kari AKA Dave Voodoo, but, Dave is actually my middle Name. I am half Hungarian so have a Hungarian first name: Ferenc
🥊 I have many roles in Combat Sports: Visionary. Software Developer. Mentor. Coach. Student. And Ex-competitor
🏠 We travel around a lot so call in many gyms, however I consider Simon McGovern’s BJJ club in Stoke and Ronin Kickboxing in Werrington to be my main gyms.
📍 I live 3 miles outside of Leek in a village called Cheddleton, in the Staffordshire Moorlands.
⏳ I have been involved in Combat Sports for over 44 years
❤️ Combat Sports have given me: Confidence, a home, belonging, a wife, injuries lol, balance, escape, peace, a living, and a good life.
🏆 My biggest achievement is surviving what I have done to almost 60 years old.
💬 The advice I would give to others is: Enjoy every training session and all the people you train with, good and bad. Forget the bad session you had. They won't remember you, that's just ego.
Forget the sessions and events that are to come. You might not get there if you don't focus on now. by @amandaifight

✨ **ONE OF THOSE PLACES THAT EXCEEDED EXPECTATIONS…**

This week our travels took us to Barrow-in-Furness, where we stayed at the beautiful **Abbey House Hotel**.

What a lovely find. ❤️

The hotel itself is absolutely stunning, with beautiful surroundings and so much character, but the real surprise for us was the restaurant.

**The food was exceptional.**

Beautifully presented, delicious and genuinely one of those meals that becomes part of the memory of the trip rather than simply somewhere you stopped to eat.

After a busy day travelling, there is something rather nice about checking into a beautiful hotel, getting dressed for dinner and discovering that you don't actually need to go anywhere else. 🥂

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely return.

Sometimes the places you weren't expecting to be a highlight turn out to be exactly that. ❤️

Happy Birthday to my gorgeous friend Avril!

What can I say about this woman… she’s not only one of my closest friends, she’s like a sister to me. ❤️

A proper crackin’, loyal friend. One of those very special people who is always there when you need her, through the good times, the bad times and everything in between.

We’ve laughed together, probably moaned together 😂, put the world to rights more times than I can remember, and made some brilliant memories along the way.

True friends are hard to find, and I feel very lucky to have you in my life, Avril. I know that whatever happens, you’ll always have my back, just as I’ll always have yours.

So today is all about YOU! 🥂🍾

Happy 58th Birthday, my lovely. I hope you have the fabulous day you deserve.

Here’s to plenty more years of friendship, laughter, adventures and probably a little bit of mischief along the way! 😂🥂

Love you loads. ❤️

Happy Birthday Avril! 🎂🎉🥂 xxx by @amandaifight

🏰 **EDINBURGH CASTLE — ABSOLUTELY STUNNING**

Another highlight from our travels this week was visiting **Edinburgh Castle**.

I've visited quite a few castles over the years, but I have to say, this was probably **the nicest and most unspoilt castle I've ever seen.**

What I loved most was that it still felt like a castle.

So many historic places can become overly modernised for visitors, but here you could really appreciate the age, character and history of the buildings.

Walking through the different areas, looking at the stonework and then taking in those incredible views across Edinburgh — it was absolutely fascinating.

It's one of those places where photographs don't quite capture the scale or atmosphere of actually being there.

We spent ages exploring and I could easily have stayed longer.

**Edinburgh has definitely become one of my favourite cities to visit.** ❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

If you've been to Edinburgh Castle, what was your favourite part?

🌿 Fresh air, good company and a beautiful place to walk 🐾💚

Had such a lovely walk around Tittesworth Reservoir today with the lovely Rosie. 🥰

There’s something so good for you about getting outside, walking amongst the trees, breathing in the fresh air and just enjoying nature. 🌳🍃

It’s not only great exercise for the body — it does wonders for the mind too. Sometimes a good walk and a bit of fresh air is exactly what you need.

Of course, followed by coffee ☕️ and scone.

😳 **TWO SIGNS THAT REALLY CAUGHT MY ATTENTION AT BEAMISH…**

These were both in the 1900s section and I couldn't resist taking photographs of them.

The first shows the rules for the workhouse — and some of them are quite sobering.

Miss church and you could go without your next meal. Damage the rules and it was bread and water for two days.

Then, just a short distance away, we found the instructions for the exciting new invention of **electric light**. 💡

Apparently people needed reminding:

**DO NOT ATTEMPT TO LIGHT WITH MATCH!** 😂

And they even had to reassure people that electricity wasn't harmful to their health or their sleep.

Two little signs, but they tell you so much about the world people were living in — incredibly strict social conditions on one hand, while completely new technology was beginning to transform everyday life on the other.

That's what I enjoyed so much about Beamish. It's not just looking at old buildings and objects — every so often you spot something that makes you stop and think about just how much everyday life has changed.

Although after walking **30,000 steps** around the place, I was quite happy to return to 2026 and my electric lights! 😂💡👣
