Yesterday Will celebrated his retirement after 30 years of service in the US Navy. It was beautiful and humbling to hear about his work and what his peers had to say about him. I still don’t know exactly what his jobs have been over the years but I am immensely proud of him and his service to this country, and I’m so happy that our friends and family got to share in the tradition of this ceremony. Also grateful to his former college roommates and ROTC buddies to flying out from Washington to share in the celebration. As far as the question that everyone has been asking (aside from “why do some of the guests wear uniforms and others don’t?”—the answer is, I’m not sure 😅) “What’s next?” Will is going to keep doing his full time civilian job educating the youth of Portland, but will have less work in the evenings and on the weekends, and he’s looking forward to enjoying his first summer off despite being a teacher for the last 20 years. Personally I’m grateful to not be separated by continents or states again! Congratulations, Captain! 🫡⚓️ by @amandaleq

When it was announced that Portland was getting a soccer team Will was immediately all in on season tickets, no hesitation. I went along because he was really into it, and I thought it might be fun. Little did I know I was about to enter a new realm of sports fandom—the players names and numbers were learned. The chants were chanted. The refs were BOOOOOOOed. I became a rabid superfan. I couldn’t wait until match day. Tonight we went to the last home game of the inaugural season and what a season it was. From cold and rainy to the sweltering blazing sun and now to crisp autumn nights. Words can’t describe the magic in the stands, and of this team. We had such a fun quick trip visit Abram and Polly in West Virginia! The cutest little town, beautiful weather and scenery, we rented bikes so they took us out to some of their (easier!) favorite trails, we ate good food, drank good coffee and had a really good time. Sad to head back so soon. The first waterfall is called Albert Falls and there is an old coal mine nearby which is what makes water that milky blue color (as inviting as it looks would not jump in). 💦 taken in Thomas, West Virginia by @amandaleq

Finished out my vacation week with 3 nights of camping in Baxter State Park where we hiked the Traveler Loop and Barrel Ridge; swam in South Branch Pond, ate lots of good food and drank strong coffee pondside in the morning, and read a 400 page book start to finish. taken in Baxter State Park by @amandaleq

We had the best quick trip to Montana to visit @katharine.hamilton! It was our 5th trip to Bozeman but only our second trip since 2011 in the summer. We hiked Storm Castle, South Cottonwood Canyon, and Lava Lake. Saw the herd of elk that roams the hillside and a deer family complete with 2 fawns. We stayed in a yurt and saw the most amazing sunsets from the patio. We got to spend our afternoons being auntie and uncle and playing Sorry! and Jenga.
