Happy Croc #fossilfriday ! We got a new guy-arial from Egypt πŸ˜…

I hope you got the joke - Gharials are a type of crocodile associated with having a mega long and thin snout with a bulbous nose. Like our friend in the first picture. Now meet Herugavialis cairensis - found from the same rock formation that the Great Sphimx was built from! Like how cool is that?! Maybe there's pieces of croc inside of that rock. And to add to the serendipity of it all - the fossil was found missing its nose just like ol sphinxy πŸ˜‚

My artwork of this new species is on the 3rd slide created with #peoplearefishartclub - and congrats to my friend and colleague @k_zanaty for creating the artwork for the article!

To find out more about our new croc friend check out the paper by @paulburke15 as well as the special exhibit created by Karim and @palaeosaurian featuring all the artists from the club on @peoplearefish YouTube channel! by @amandalocaris

Dinodontosaurus isiyavamanda newness for #fossilfriday !!

A new species of Dicynodont has been identified! These chonky weirdos are very distant mammal relatives known and named after those two massive tusks (*di for two and *dents for teeth). They are nothing like anything alive today and so recreating them artistically and explaining them to people is always a bit of a challenge - but fun nonetheless.

Being discovered in Tanzania, and comparing that geology to previous finds in south America, hints at a possibility of an earlier start for Dinosaurs. Another interesting thing, from a bug point of view, is that coprolite has been found in Argentina, likely made from these triassic animals, that contains the earliest evidence of hexagonal insect wing scales. These scales are likely to be from possibly the earliest relative to lepidoptera (butterflies and moths). Which means they may have not evolved alongside flowing plants as was originally thought!

So you wanna help museums do ya? πŸ¦–πŸ€©

My friend Erik Crawford, creator of the Prehistoric Life Podcast which I have had the pleasure of being on, is feeling the same way. There are many places that do not have close access to museums and deserve it - so what is his solution? Let's make one!! But as we all know too well this isn't a cheap and simple endeavor- and this is where you can help someone achieve a dream while making the future dream of someone you may not even know in South carolina come true at the same time.

A kickstarter has been started to help fund the creation of the first exhibit of a possible 3 story masterpiece - An allosaurus chasing a juvinielle Stegosaurus!! You even have a chance to get a couple skulls for your own collection πŸ˜‰

Check out his website and newest YouTube video where he explains all of his ideas

#fossilfriday London/Lyme photo dump

Fossils - inspiration, enlightenment, joy, and wonder...these are only a few emotions that come to mind when being in their presence. The world stops for a moment. Transported to another time and place. What was their life like? Their death? Their stories?

These moments should be available to ANYONE and EVERYONE! I will say that until I am blue in the face. It seems like slowly these experiences are being taken away from some...and it sickens my stomach and breaks my heart. But this is not the end...no...it's the beginning of a new era. One where we can destroy gatekeeping and paywalls. But we have to make our voices heard now more than ever

Visit museums, fill out their questionnaire, send those emails and write those letters. It CAN and WILL make a difference by @amandalocaris

Caterpillars πŸ› We see them but do we? πŸ€¨πŸ€”

Welcome to this week's #fossilfriday

I took this picture of this cute little tussock moth caterpillar yesterday which reminded me of a little cat with whiskers and everything! But it got me thinking about their fossil record which, like most insects, is a hot mess and almost non existent. And for caterpillars that's surprising because so many insects have this stage of growth in their metamorphosis!

You may have noticed I said "insect" - although we tend to associated "caterpillars" directly with butterflies, the truth is that other types of insects such as flies and beetles, have a larval stage. Which is essentially a caterpillar. And their fossils can be tricky to interpret because of that!

The second slide, Eogeometer vadens is one of the oldest known true caterpillar from Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies) described coming from the Cretaceous around 100 million years ago. Next a rewriting of history from last year where the fossil of Palaeocampa anthrax, originally described as a caterpillar in 1865 from carboniferous rock, was found to actually be the oldest nonmarine lobopodian, extinct soft-bodied worm-like dudes. They bridge the gap between early worm like creatures to modern arthropods and are mostly aquatic and found in the burgess shale of BC by @amandalocaris

One of the most enigmatic prehistoric critters for #fossilfriday - the dodo🦀

Thanks to @evol.sara and her team's research, we have a better understanding of this funky old bird. A personal fav, the dodo is a close relative of forest pigeons and went extinct in 1662. Until now our knowledge of its appearance and behaviour stems mostly from 17th century art - until now!

Can you picture these bubbly birds hunting under the moonlight for tasty grubs?

Zombie Dinosaurs for #fossilfriday πŸ§ŸπŸ¦– Sorta πŸ˜…

This year we had Nanotyrranus comes back from the dead as its existence has been proven real! The debate over whether or not it was a true taxa on its own, or a juvinielle T-rex has been one of the longest in the history of palaeontology. For decades it was thought that there was no way two large predators could be part of a single ecosystem (hell creek formation example) but there were many of us that felt differently.

The authors of the study, published in January, used a slew of tests comparing a well preserved rex specimen with the now holotype of Nanotyrannus lancensis from the "dueling dinosaurs". They found many examples to show the differences between not only T rex and Nanotyrannus but that Jane, a previously labeled juvinielle rex, was actually a second species of Nanotyrannus!

See my sketch on the 3rd slide

And this is the beauty of science - it grows and evolves with new specimens, research, and points of view. It is not static but ever changing as our world πŸ’š by @amandalocaris

Finally getting around to painting and building this little guy! 🎨

This skull was graciously gifted by @biobuildstudios - I usually do browns but I decided to go for blacks and greys for a change! I love how it really looks like stone - I thinking of giving it a red/violet glaze for extra funzies but then again I love how it looks like this and don't want to screw it upπŸ₯² Maybe just the base? Thoughts?

Can you guess the dinosaurs from these bits?

Sorry for missing #fossilfriday last week - but alas I am only human by @amandalocaris
