Javier and I met at a long term fasting facility in Northern California in February 2025 (a story for another time). We were both in relatively challenging places with our health, seeking reprieve and restoration holistically.

I was supposed to lead a trip through Southern Spain a few months later, and when I found out that not only was Javier Spanish, but that he was from the very area we’d be visiting, I told him about it. He kindly offered to open his home to our group, host a meal, take us on a hike, and even potentially get us out on a boat in the Mediterranean.

I was optimistic, but uncertainty and discouraging progress with my health ultimately meant I had to cancel. The trip continued, but we cancelled the segment with Javier in Mojácar.

As fate would have it, he ended up running into the group I was supposed to lead on the side of a mountain just outside his town a few months later. A coincidence? I think not.

When the opportunity to join one of the cycling tours this year came up, Javier signed up and brought his broth taken in Santiago De Compostela, Galicia, Espana by @amandamillar

Flew from Izmir to Madrid to dust off my guiding hat and embark on the joy and challenge of leading a group 150+ miles along the Camino de Santiago.

The first photo is from Day 1 of preparation in Puerta del Sol, Madrid, and the last is celebratory gelato in Santiago de Compostela after 10 days of trekking.

In between were countless shared memories, meals, conversations, cultures, stories, tears, laughter, and intimate moments. The experience of the Camino is unlike any other: raw, real, stripped of comfort, and full of people carrying their own reasons for being there. So many different walks of life, all sharing the same road. And boy, do you see the overwhelming BEAUTY of humanity, of creation, of hospitality, & of people truly showing up for one another.

Forever grateful for the people it brought into my life. One person in particular embodies a remarkably resilient strength and a steady, delightful joy despite unimaginable suffering. I admire her immensely. We cried and rejoiced together in the weight of being sick, and in the gift of still being here with the people we love.

final film from a day in Ephesus

It was sobering to walk through the ruins of a place that was once so powerful.

To stand in the very place where John’s Gospel and epistles were written…To see the mountain where Paul lived... To visit the final place where the mother of our Lord lived… To stand in a place so deeply woven into the story of the early church…

the library of celsus!! over 12,000 scrolls!!

The magnitude and weight of Paul’s words to the Ephesians took on an entirely new form as I walked through the remnants of what life once looked like for the early church.

a rare occurrence of all of us together and it was of course to celebrate our Gabriel!!! also… Christian is 6’3 now!? should be illegal!! 🥹🥰

Ten years ago… and I’m still in denial about how grown, handsome, and beautiful everyone is.

Gabriel, B.A. M.A. J.D., graduated from law school in May as Vice President of his class, and while he has certainly racked up more accolades and accomplishments than we can count at this point, we are even more proud of the kind-hearted, disciplined, steadfast, strong, passionate and loving son, brother, and friend he has become. He’s simply the best.

oh the gift that it is to have built in best friends for life!!!

1/2 of the Millar crew rendezvoused in LA back in March and slowly made our way north. dreaming of the day all 8 of us take a trip together.

The first half of the trip was in southern California. Our great-grandfather—Pa—lives alone at 93 in Bear Valley, California. His stories are rich and his love is unmistakable.

He left school in the ninth grade to join the military, hoping to support his single mother and four siblings. At 19, he met our Nana at a baseball game in San Antonio, Texas. She would bring sweets to the games to thank the officers, and he was immediately smitten. Just a few months later, and days before his 20th birthday, they were married and went on to share 65 years together before the Lord called her home.

Pa embodies grit, determination, courage, kindness, selflessness, sacrifice, intentionality, hard work, and steadfastness. He is practical and purposeful, an engineer at heart, quick to create and adamant about serving. Though he is unashamed to share how deeply he still misses his beloved, even now, just weeks before his 94th birthday, he spends his days tinkering in his shop and serving his community with compassion and care. He is a remarkable man.

You never know how choosing to be kind and loving to someone can literally change the trajectory of not only their life, but of generations to come. If it weren’t for Nana and Pa’s unconditional love and the way they were the hands and feet of Christ to my mom from such a young age, we wouldn’t be here today. He’s simply the best. by @amandamillar
