Introducing The Relay Room

3AM, @amandaplusjames , and @charlesvadanner have spent the last two months building, installing, and bringing The Relay Room to life!

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for the opening celebration and to everyone who has donated to help make this space possible. Your support has already helped create a new home for artists exploring the intersection of performance and technology.

We’re now accepting submissions for projects in development, including residencies, rehearsals, workshops, and creative experiments. We also have one long-term desk available for an artist, designer, or creative technologist looking to make The Relay Room their home base.

If you have a project you’d like to develop or are interested in joining, please reach out!!

Our one-time launch campaign is helping us cover the upfront costs of building the space, including desks, storage, and an AC unit. If you’d like to help us get across the finish line, please consider donating. (Link in bio)

I’ve been working on this solo show for so long now but there have been a ton of people helping me along the way. Thanks to @julianafmay and Art Group for pushing me to make the big odd thing I really wanted to make rather than trying to fit into a single form, thanks to @donbo615 for recommending me to @artsonsite which gave me the free space to try out a very very early idea, THE MOST thanks to @jaceweyant for being a part of that first version and every one since, thanks to Katie at @kestrelsbk for to responding to my absolutely desperate email when I wanted to do a show before giving birth and recognizing how important this was for me and fitting me into a very busy schedule, (thanks to @nattietroggie for recommending that I reach out!!) thanks to @ethanhardyethan for watching early early rehearsals and insisting that I can be funnier and that it’s ok to just go for a laugh, thanks to @zamboni_updates for the most incredible Hung Up remix of all time, thanks to @cprnyc and @cam11235 for letting me go big on projection design and to @koreantuxedo for seeing that show and introducing me to @justajuggla and @_3amstudio_ thanks to the dreamiest dramaturg @cdiercks for forcing me to write a real script and make a real character and to @remiharris_ for pushing to me ask for more and reminding me that I don’t have to do everything myself, and to @asiastewart for helping me make bigger claims about my work, and always and forever, thanks to @thedannerparty for not letting me cancel the show when I wanted to and for always talking me down off of a cliff.
^^just a quick reminder of how many people help make a tiny show happen. Also so much of making performance work is based on people taking a moment to listen and doing you a favor. I think about that a lot.

Link in bio to support upfront costs for getting The Relay Room up and running!!

@3amtheatre and @amandaplusjames are partnering to open The Relay Room in The Cigar Factory LIC. The Relay Room will join 3AM’s existing studio and theater, as a third place to create, with a focus on technology in performance. In this shared space, artists will have access to technical equipment, projectors, cameras, a greenscreen / photography backdrop, sound booth, and creative community. The Relay Room is a communal space for experimentation and exploration. We are interested in artists who deeply consider the body’s relationship to technology and therefore create work that utilizes the tools of sound, video, live projection, to serve the vision and thesis of the piece. Understanding that performance is nothing without rehearsal, Relay Room artists will also have access to 3AM’s theater and studio to immediately workshop and test their ideas.
