Hi Everyone,

I wanted to share a Wilkening family update.

As many of you know, the last few months have changed our lives in ways we never could have imagined.

On April 14, my dad and I made the difficult decision to take my mom to the emergency room after noticing she hadn’t been acting like herself for several weeks. Her personality had changed, she had become unusually carefree, her sense of time seemed off, her left hand kept locking up, and she was often distracted and checked out. We feared she may have had a stroke.

After hours in the ER and an MRI, the doctors delivered the devastating news that my mom had tumors on the right side of her brain. The fast-growing tumors were causing swelling, which explained the symptoms we had been seeing.

On April 21, just one day after her 58th birthday, she underwent brain surgery to remove as much of one of the tumors as could be safely removed. The surgery went well, and we immediately saw improvement in many of her symptoms. Unfortunately, the biopsy confirmed our greatest fear—Grade 4 glioblastoma, an aggressive and fast-growing brain cancer.

After spending three weeks recovering from surgery, my mom completed six weeks of radiation alongside oral chemotherapy to help fight the cancer and slow its growth.

We have been incredibly fortunate to have an amazing neurologist at Kaiser who has shown us so much compassion, kindness, and support throughout this journey.

Because of the incredible family I’ve found at Compass, an agent from New York reached out and connected us with the team at City of Hope, whose groundbreaking research and clinical trials have given us even more hope.

Today, on my 37th birthday, my mom and I fly to Southern Ca. to meet with the specialists at City Of Hope. We’re praying she may qualify for a clinical trial or that they’ll have additional treatment options to help us continue this fight. Tomorrow, she’ll begin her second round of chemotherapy—five days of treatment that she’ll repeat every 28 days.

My mom is doing her best through all of this. She is incredibly strong and truly a trooper, but she’s also very tired from everything her taken in Saint Helena, California by @amandashaw89
