When you think of the apartheid you probably think of Nelson Mandela, identity passes, the Soweto uprisings, the segregationist policies that impacted people’s everyday lives or the protests that ensued all over the world. But what isn’t spoken about as much are families, and the interpersonal relationships that persevered in an environment fraught with restriction and violence imposed by a nonsensical and contradictory regime.

The purpose of this archive is to ensure that when we tell stories about this time, we have a frame of reference that we’ve created for ourselves. Using this a platform for our community to have autonomy over our history, which will continue to be a guiding principle of this project.

But I need your help.

Although I have enough family photos to fill the archive myself this is not something that only affected them. It’s our story and I believe we should all contribute to how it’s been told.

We’re looking for submissions of family photos from South Africa between 1948 and 1994. Birthdays, Christmas’s weddings, funerals, Sunday dinners. No image is too “mundane”. Our dm’s are open

With love always
D x
