Yesterday I was at the studio and an older woman I’m friendly with came over to give unsolicited advice about what I was doing. She started handling my piece without asking and ended up throwing it off center. The piece ended up collapsing and it was so frustrating for me, not because I am precious with my pottery - I love the process of creation and destruction - but because she took away my ownership of that process. All of a sudden it was a collaboration I didn’t ask for.
I know she had good intentions, and I don’t expect to hold onto that resentment, but it brought up so many feelings for me in general. I’m tired of being interfered with during this season of my life. All I want is to love and support others and share my gifts. You would think that would be a simple goal to achieve, but it is not.
I know the answer isn’t isolation, and I still want to be friendly w this lady, but I’m struggling with how to draw protective boundaries when people push into my space and, intentionally or not, cause me turmoil. It seems like people have forgotten the art of “taking the hint.” You can display your discomfort in obvious ways, but many people will play the fool until you verbally tell them - “stop.”
With this lady in particular, I know it would hurt her feelings for me to say “stop” in the way she needs in order to change her behavior. She used to be a pottery teacher and she’s already expressed to me how students were “mean” to her in the past. I don’t want to hurt her feelings. So what’s the answer then? Do I allow her to continue? Let it go?
Boundaries. I have a natural impulse to collapse them and embrace people even when they do me harm, and it ends up putting me in situations where I get further hurt. I want to remain part of the whole, but I also want to free to be myself. My self is always the first thing I sacrifice in order to stay close with others.
These are just the thought rolling around in my head. Please feel free to share if you are going through something similar.
