“Shadow and Flame”

Tyrannosaurus rex. During the brutish fire season, Pyriphlegethon lives up to its infernal namesake. Crackling embers and searing haze drown the nearby woods, bathing Helushka with an imposing, Hadean façade.

This is the second take of an idea from a few years ago that I never got around to finishing. It provided me with an opportunity to practice and experiment with different rendering techniques to render heavy atmosphere.

Completed in late September 2026.

Done using acrylics, color pencils, inks, and Photoshop 2026.

“Lord of the Flame”

Tyrannosaurus rex. As seasonal bush fires die down, opportunists like Helushka know how to make the most of what is a calamity for most. Heat exhaustion and smoke inhalation leave many survivors of the initial blaze dazed, allowing hunters a chance at easy prey.

This was an attempt at using two separate light sources to light Helushka, with some overcast sunlight coming from between the smoke clouds and some remaining flames scattered throughout the forest he is in. I wanted to get the vibe that this was a photo taken from a distance, with some minor flames between the viewer and Helushka. I added some minor heat distortion near the bottom of the shot using Photoshop.

Completed in late August 2026.

Done using acrylics, color pencils, inks, and Photoshop 2026.

“A Nap Interrupted”

Tarbosaurus bataar. On hot and humid days like this, Khan and one of his shield maidens tend to spend their hot afternoons napping, trying to beat the heat. During the hotter months, they prefer keeping their active hours constrained to the glow of moonlight. Even in the throes of their afternoon nap, their ears are in tune with the goings-on around them. Walking them up is never a good option.

Heavily inspired by Aaron Blaise’s artwork of lions, I wanted to play around with the lighting here. I wanted it to feel like a cloudy day with a minor break in the clouds, a god ray highlighting a groggy Khan. I made heavy use of my acrylic markers to add little highlights all over Khan and to detail the leaflitter on the ground.

Completed in late June 2026.

Done using acrylics, color pencils, inks and Photoshop 2025.

I decided to take a wee break from the current Helushka piece since this one is on a bit of a time crunch.

Glad to see this little cutie I reconstructed for @repkyle95 back in 2021 finally has a name; Infernogallus jamesi (Funston 2026).

Of the three caegnathids I reconstructed for Kyle, this design was my favorite.
