Framed by the iconic landscape of the Pacific Northwest, Ambar Estate is the first and only Regenerative Organic Certified® vineyard in the Willamette Valley.

We believe Regenerative Organic® farming not only produces fruit that best expresses our storied terroir, but also contributes to a larger global climate solution.

Every decision we make in the vineyard and beyond is in service of this goal, from nurturing soil health and biodiversity, to caring for the animals who visit our property, and ensuring our team is valued and able to flourish.

The result is remarkable estate-grown wines born in the vineyard, expressing the unique time and place of Ambar.

Just like the deciduous trees around our estate, our grapevines change color in the fall before their leaves drop. We’re enjoying the golden landscape that marks the transition into autumn.

As the days become shorter and temperatures begin to cool, the vine receives signals that the growing season is coming to an end and it’s time to prepare for winter dormancy. With the grapes harvested, the vine can begin shifting its energy toward storing carbohydrates in its roots and woody tissue. These reserves will help sustain the vine through winter and provide energy when growth begins again in spring. by @ambarestate

There’s a distinct energy in the cellar during harvest. The air is filled with the earthy, yeasty aromas of fermenting fruit as our winemaking team begins the process of turning grapes into wine.

Our Pinot Noir is now well into fermentation, and with it comes an important part of the winemaking process: extraction.

Extraction is the process of drawing color, tannin, flavor, and aromatic compounds from the grape skins out and into the fermenting red wine. To do this, our winemaking team uses two techniques: pump overs and punch downs.

During a pump over, fermenting wine is drawn from the bottom of the tank and gently poured over the red cap, keeping the skins saturated.

During a punch down, the cap is manually pushed back down into the wine, bringing the skins and juice back together.

For our team, red cap management is all observing how fermentation is progressing and adjusting our approach as the fruit tells us what it needs. by @ambarestate

Introducing Hachiko, the newest member of the Ambar team. The 3-month-old Labrador arrived just in time to romp though the vineyard during harvest. He already has a namesake block, the Hachiko block, planted with the Pommard clone of Pinot Noir.

Ambar co-owners Pamela Turner and Robert Townsend and their three children lived in Tokyo, Japan for six years. During that time they learned the story of Hachiko, a famous Japanese Akita dog who went every day to Tokyo’s Shibuya train station to wait for his master, after his master died at work and failed to return on the afternoon train. Pamela is a children’s book author and her first published book was Hachiko: The True Story of a Loyal Dog.

Hachiko often visits the Ambar tasting room. If you’re lucky, you might get to meet our loveable new pup in person. taken in Dundee Hills AVA by @ambarestate

“I always love bringing in the first grapes from harvest, smelling the bouquet of the fermentation, and all the energy that comes with this time of year in the vineyard and winery.” - Winemaker Bryan Weil

Once the fruit is picked, our team shifts its focus to the cellar. At Ambar, every cluster and berry passes through multiple hands before fermentation, with three rounds of hand sorting to ensure that only the best fruit becomes wine.

First: the vineyard. As each cluster is cut from the vine, our vineyard team immediately removes large leaves, debris, and any clusters that don’t meet our standards before the fruit is brought to production.

Next: the first line sort. Multiple members of our team inspect the fruit by hand, removing clusters with signs of underripeness, broken fruit, or other imperfections.

Then: destemming and another round of hand sorting. The clusters pass through a destemmer, which gently separates the berries from their stems. The berries continue down the line for one final hand sort, where another group of team members carefully removes any underripe, damaged, or broken berries and any vineyard debris that may have made it through.

It’s a careful, hands-on process, and one that reflects how we approach every stage of winemaking at Ambar. taken in Dundee Hills AVA by @ambarestate

On a cool, misty morning this past weekend, our vineyard team harvested the Chardonnay from Writer’s Block, the first block of vines to produce fruit on our estate.

Writer’s Block represents the beginning of our estate. It was here that our first vines took root and where the vision for Ambar began to take shape. The block takes its name from the writing pavilion nestled at the base of the property, a quiet space created for creativity and reflection.

The vines are the Dijon 548 Chardonnay clone, known for producing expressive wines with tropical notes of guava, kumquat, and mango. The clusters themselves are distinctive, with berries that vary naturally in size and shape.

Last year’s harvest from these vines became the 2024 Writer’s Block Chardonnay, one of our most limited wines and a special release reserved for Gold Circle members this October.
