It’s Glass! People seemed to be into that little process clip on my stories yesterday and I realized I don’t really show how I make things too often. It’s not a secret how I flamework but I’m usually alone and don’t think about making a video. I’m working on a little clip right now for the @objects_usa #withourhands campaign. Although this ones a little too long it shows how I make one of my favorite pieces I call a feather. My tool is a pair of large bonsai shears. by @amber.cowan

Hummingbirds Feast on Helio and Lavender

Found and flameworked glass, mixed media, powder coated aluminum frame.
This piece is made with flameworked neodymium lavender cullet and features two amethyst hummingbirds and an antique Cambridge Glass Factory goblet made in the color Helio which was only produced from 1923-1924. The amethyst is dripping from the bird feeder creating crystal formations on the mossy ground below. The sky disks are blown in the hotshop using melted down cullet.
I’m sad to see this one leave my studio. I really like these two hungry birds. Side-note I love the word “feast” and finally got to use it in a title. ♥️🙌 by @amber.cowan

The glass world lost a true icon this week with the passing of Paul Stankard. Paul was a mentor and inspiration to me from the very beginning of my career. I’m having trouble putting into words the depth of his influence on so many artists and students. His work, teaching, books, and story affected so many of us in glass that his legacy changed the field itself for the better. I worked for Paul just out of graduate school in his New Jersey studio and we joked that my job was making the “bee butts” for his pieces. I learned so much not only about glass but about dedication to craft and loving the life you build. He was always saying to young artists
“you’re the real deal”. Which felt incredible coming from someone like him.

Thank you so much to the @pghglasscenter @heathermcelwee and the Fleischner family for having me as their 2026 honorary artist at the Art on Fire party last Friday! I took my first glass specialty workshop at PGC in 2003 and since then it has had a special place in my heart ♥️ taken in Pittsburgh Glass Center by @amber.cowan

What if being broken doesn’t mean losing your value? ✨

For glass artist @amber.cowan, broken fragments are not endings. They are beginnings.

Working with industrial scrap glass, remnants from defunct factories and antique pieces that might otherwise disappear, Cowan creates intricate sculptures where memory, craftsmanship and imagination collide. But perhaps the most beautiful part of her practice is not simply what she rescues. It is how she teaches us to look again.

In a culture constantly asking for something newer, faster and more perfect, Cowan’s work offers another possibility: to notice what remains, to honour what carries history and to find beauty in what others have already discarded.

Swans in Delphite and Rosalene was recently featured in a @thisiscolossal article highlighting my newer domes series. I just sent this piece up to @randcompanynyc in NYC. I love this color combo with the delphite blue and pink. It features an antique Imperial Glass base and two extremely rare Boyd’s Glass swans. 11x8x8”. Please inquire with the gallery. For 25 years, Pittsburgh Glass Center has been a place where artists come to experiment, learn, and create. Art on Fire helps make those opportunities possible.

I'm Amber Cowan, the 2026 Art on Fire Honorary Artist, and I have experienced that firsthand. I took my first workshop at PGC with Shane Fero in 2004, and it was the first time I truly saw a working glass studio outside of a school environment. It opened up a new understanding of what a life in glass could look like and what was possible beyond the classroom.

Art on Fire directly supports that work. Every donated piece helps provide studio access, artist residencies, and opportunities for makers at every stage of their careers.

We would be grateful to include your artwork in this special 25th anniversary year celebration. I’m especially excited that participating artists will have the opportunity to receive a 10-day residency at PGC. Three residencies will be awarded through jury and public selection, demonstrating another way this community continues to invest in artists.
