Rule #1 of audition rotations: actually envision what life could look like if you lived there.

The program matters, of course, but so does the life you’ll have outside of the hospital. I’ve been trying to experience each city beyond just showing up for my rotation. I’ve been exploring different neighborhoods, visiting churches, finding good food and coffee, and even joining a local run club.

Because wherever I end up for residency will be home for the next few years, and community, hobbies, and having a life outside of medicine definitely play a part in that decision.

So here’s a little glimpse of a post-call day as a 4th-year med student in DC. 🤍

Fun fact: I actually got accepted to Howard for undergrad, but my mom wouldn’t let me go because it was out of state 😂 Funny how God has a way of bringing things full circle!

I’m learning that enjoying your own company is a skill.

1. You don’t have to wait for someone to make plans with you. Make the plans yourself.
2. Put some effort into getting ready even if you’re the only person you’re getting ready for. Do your makeup, put together a cute outfit, wear the perfume.
3. Go to the nice restaurant. You don’t need a birthday, a date, or a special occasion to experience something nice.
4. Bring a book. Put your phone down for a little while. Look around. Enjoy your food. Be present.
5. Being alone in public might feel awkward at first. Do it anyway. Your comfort zone gets bigger when you actually step outside of it.
6. Your own company can actually be really peaceful when you stop treating alone time like time that needs to be filled.
7. And most importantly, being alone and being lonely are not the same thing. There’s a certain peace in knowing that wherever I go, Jesus is with me.

Maybe the plans you’ve been waiting on are plans you can make yourself. I’m still learning but I’m enjoying the process.

Find life outside of medical school or whatever season you’re in. Stay grounded in faith. Refuse burnout. Find joy. Chase something that pushes you. Build your community. You’ll be better because of it.

Sometimes you have to yell at yourself to make it happen!

Tonight’s rule was simple:

Be out of the gym by 7:30.

Finished at 7:33… close enough 😅

Gym days are few and far between, but it’s about making the time you do have count.

Some weeks it’s 4 workouts.
Some weeks it’s 1.

I’m not gonna lie there have definitely been days I stayed in there for hours knowing durn well I need to go study.

But we’re working on that 😅

Either way, show up.
Set a timer.
Get in. Get out.

And my girl @kellylmatthews and @joinladder gets me together every time 👏🏾
