40 has felt so different than I imagined these past few months. Babyfaced. Pouty. Sometimes too impatient. I dye my (graying) hair, but no longer use photo filters. I like makeup and have a lively skincare routine, but I have no cosmetic fillers. I’m not trying to halt aging. I’m throwing away the rules, refusing to follow their timelines. I create in my own time, slow like honey, not in a race with anyone but myself. Even then, I am learning to be a compassionate partner to myself. Learning to accept this skin and the body that wears it. Working on the baggage that a life that has experienced trauma can acquire, but clearing out the rafters of old behaviors that have overstayed their welcome. Head and heart always in a very passionate tango, rose between teeth, trying to figure out which one is leading. I am. It’s me. I allow these emotions and then I’m getting better at allowing them to blow away like dandelion seed head. Who am I. When society’s rules and standards are peeled back and exposed. Who am I when not under the weight of the worlds view. “If someone were to poke out the eyes of the hawks, we sparrows could dance wherever we please!” Fly fly little sparrow. Setting myself free has been half the battle, truly embracing myself arms wide open has been the greatest lesson so far. This is my version of 40. by @amberscarletsletter

I just don’t have the words today. The female body has never been free, not under the weight of the misogyny of men who get to make rules about a body they will never own, never fully understand nor respect. The human decency has been lost, if it ever was a part of this country in the first place. I feel so much and have a lot to say. But not today. It’s time to fight back. I was born 38 years ago today, during one of the biggest snowstorms in Detroit history. After 37.5 hours of labor (sorry mom). I’ve never been one to really get too excited about my birthday, but after the past year, I feel incredibly grateful and fortunate to have a birthday at all. I feel heartbroken for the over 500,000+ people who won’t celebrate a birthday this year. So please wear a mask, get your vaccinations as soon as you can and just be kind to everyone. It’s not about the time left, it’s a matter of principle and sets a precedent. We have to let it be known to our country and every other country that we will not stand for a President now or in the future who behaves without a modicum of tact. This has to stop now, with Trump. He needs to be disallowed to run for office again, he should not be allowed even one day more in office from causing an insurrection on our country’s capitol building. We the people need to raise our voices loud and clear, we refuse to allow a authoritarian leader to incite citizens to act as domestic terrorists. Each and every Nazi/Trump supporter who took part in the coup needs to be held accountable and charged to the full extent of the law. Justice needs to be served, our future and collective humanity depends upon it. by @amberscarletsletter
