Happy weekend, #booksta! Just like my return to this account, my reading has been steady this week. I finished off The Heir Apparent, which I thoroughly enjoyed. But a busy work week makes it so hard for me to focus these days. I also had my birthday, which was slightly underwhelming this year for a multitude of reasons but maybe that’s just your mid thirties for you? 🥲 Matt and I have been going to the cinema a lot lately - we saw Sense and Sensibility last night (beautiful, 5 stars) and then nipped down to watch Verity today (yay unlimited card and yay for bookish adaptations!). I’ve picked up The Favourites by @laynefargo as my current read and I’m really enjoying it. I love an ice hockey read at the best of times but this one has a slight air of a TJR book about it which is a bonus in my eyes. Everyone say hi to Goose who believes his presence improves absolutely everything I do. Oh hi, #bookstagram 🥹🤍 I’m making a very tentative return to bookish life after life has been the biggest rollercoaster imaginable. We got married, we got a kitten, we went on honeymoon… we received a life altering diagnosis in our family that has totally rocked our worlds, my endometriosis has been rearing it’s not so glorious head and yet I’ve somehow managed to hold down a pretty stressful job too. AND I’ve slipped in a few good books along the way. Sadly, Bookstagram became a bit of a chore throughout the chaos and my reading also suffered but with the dark nights drawing in I’m looking forward to relaxing with a book, a cuppa and a snuggle of my 19 week old kitten Goose. Maybe my husband (weird word still) too I guess… 👀 I’m reading The Heir Apparent by @rebeccaarmitageauthor and People Watching by @authorhannahby, enjoying both! ❔What are you currently reading and tell me something fun you’ve done lately! Oh hi pals 🥹✨🫶🏻 Let’s just pretend it’s not been… 5? ish? months since I did a grid post. No big ceremony of my return with a fab excuse I’m afraid, just life being busy and brilliant and also a bit crap from time to time. I’m currently reading Uncharmed by @lucyjanewood and I’m 20% in and loving it already. I finished Keep It In The Family by @johnmarrs.author earlier today and rated that 4 stars - a fab read! I’m so happy to see the return of some blue skies… it’s almost garden reading weather. Anyone else desperately excited? For my QOTD today please tell me how you are?! What are you currently reading? ✨ Happy Hump Day #booksta! ✨ Starting my day off right with a very pumpkin inspired bath. 🛁 🎃 Yesterday I picked up Forget Me Not by @juliesotowrites and I’m really enjoying it so far. Forget Me Not is my third read by Julie - we was a new to me author this year having read Rose in Chains and Not Another Love Song and loving both. I love finding a new favourite author and having a backlog to work through. 🙌🏻 ❔Have you discovered any new to you authors this year? Which book made you a fan? Over a week on and I’m still thinking about Alchemised by @senlinyuwrites. The easiest 5 star review of the year for me. 🤍 ‘Someday, she promised herself, someday I am going to love him in a moment that isn’t stolen.’ Traumatic. Infuriating. Consuming. Alchemised will have you questioning every emotion from the very first page to the last. I’ve never felt so torn between hating and loving characters so completely. This is not a romantasy. It’s a thousand pages of brutal war, raw survival, and relentless violence - with a fragile, devastating love story woven exquisitely through the chaos. Alchemised isn’t easy to read, and it isn’t meant to be fun. It shattered my heart, left me in pieces, and will haunt me for a long time. There are no neat, happy endings here, yet I found deep satisfaction in where the story ultimately led. As someone who has also read Manacled, I can confidently say this deserves that final half-star from me. SenLinYu has built a world so politically, magically and religiously intricate that from the first chapter, you’re immersed …trapped even, in its brutality. The trials Helena and Kaine endure are unlike anything I’ve ever read. No book has made me cry this many times before. Do I recommend Alchemised? Absolutely, but not to everyone. Read the content warnings, and approach it when you’re ready for something this heavy. Don’t be discouraged if it’s not for you, especially if you’ve been misled to expect a fantasy romance. This book wrecked me - and it’s earned a permanent place among my favourites. I think I’ll be thinking about Helena and Kaine and their story for a long time to come. ❔ Which books have stayed with you over the years? I’m just getting stuck into Dire Bound by @sablesorensen after seeing it absolutely everywhere on my feed lately! Have you read it? I feel like I need a fantasy after 3 fabulous romances in a row and THEN being destroyed my Atmosphere by TJR. Gosh I sobbed. Pandora’s little crush on Victor is growing, and with their big fat vampire wedding looming, will their promise of ‘till death do us part’ be fake after all?’ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I can’t tell you how pleasantly surprised by this book I am. It was fabulous. Cosy, urban fantasy romance done to perfection in my opinion. I laughed, welled up a bit and devoured it in a day. I loved the female friendship in this one and the romance was done really, really well. Victor is a PEACH and such a green flag. I’m actually really looking forward to diving into some of the authors other books because her writing is fun, accessible and flows really nicely. Top marks from me! If you need a little bit more convincing… we have spice, a coffee shop setting, a marriage of convenience AND fake dating. Run, don’t walk to grab your copy now. I’m often wary of rating gifted reads 5 stars because it can look a little forced but this one deserves it for me. Thank you so much to @avonbooksuk for my review copy.
