Stool where the way it is supported and assembled defines its form rather than decorative details.

The flat seat also allows it to function as a small side table.

Small in scale, yet architectural in character.

Designed in 1941 - during a period of limited metal supply.

The round seat, splayed legs, and central joint all appear to serve a structural purpose.

Small black metal components set against the warmth of solid wood give the stool a more structural and industrial character.

More than a stool, it serves as a small platform that moves around the house.

The visible joints on the seat

Prouvé is known for his approach to metal structures and industrial production, and this stool feels like an extension of that thinking into wood.

Serving as a side table

It resembles a small construction where structural forces and assembly methods are made visible.

The original design features three tapered wooden legs joined by a small, exposed steel bracket, with visible bolts.

A design gallery and shop centered around Dutch Design, presenting furniture, objects, and works by emerging designers. Rather than feeling like a conventional furniture showroom, the space feels closer to a modern art exhibition, filled with artistic, craft-driven, and functional furniture that explores unconventional materials and new ways of making. A long-standing place for discovering new voices in Dutch design.

Exhibits - Kho Liang Ie <Mid-Century Modernist>

🏢Places I’ve visited 16 - @stedelijkmuseum Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam

First stop after arriving in Amsterdam. The preserved original building and its contemporary extension create a clear visual contrast between old and new. An extensive and diverse collection of modern furniture and art. Located next to the famous Van Gogh Museum, it’s a place not to miss while in the city. The current exhibitions on Yayoi Kusama and Kho Liang Ie are also well worth seeing. More on Kho Liang Ie’s furniture exhibition in a separate post next week.

🏢Places I’ve visited 15 - Flavel House museum

Stopped by the museum during a trip to Astoria last August.
With its original molding and finishes preserved inside and out, the house feels as though time has stood still since the 1800s.
Victorian style isn’t usually my preference, but the details and carefully researched period furnishings made it feel like stepping briefly into another time.
The museum offers a glimpse into everyday life of the era, from the layout of the house to the history of the town itself.
It preserves and restores the former home of the Flavel family, one of the wealthiest families in this small fishing town.
The mansion is said to fully embody the Queen Anne style, which was at the height of its popularity in the US between 1884-86 .
If you’re visiting Astoria or passing through on a drive, it’s well worth a short stop.
