„You say Londonderry, I say Derry. Let’s call the whole thing off.“ —
Derry (Doire – “oak”– one of the five sacred trees of Ireland), the smaller sister of Belfast, had been on my list for years. Not because I thought I could explain its history — The real archives and the Future are the people — a living library of memory, dignity and truth. So listen to them.

So what I’m sharing are only impressions, fragments, echoes from a short single day.

People like Sean McKernan, a true West Belfaster, my bestie @sabinetroendle, and many others — who carry these stories with depth, commitment and lived experience — and express them through their gifts in writing, recounting, film, photography, music and more — are the ones who truly deserve the respect for telling them.

But even as a visitor, you feel it straight away: Derry, the Bogside’s stands on courage, memory, working-class pride and a sense of solidarity that has never left. 🇮🇪☘️🇮🇪

PS: I didn’t realise — even though I’ve known the track since my teens — that ‘Theme from Harry’s Game’ by @clannadband actually comes from a miniseries adapted from a 1975 novel, set during the Troubles in Northern Ireland.

So here they are then, 170.60368 ft over, landing right in front of me. 🤓
And this will be the state of things for the next year and a half — unless even more inconveniences turn up.
The budget has already doubled, and it will most likely come at the expense of the once-promised vertical gardens.🌲🌳🌴

Some old old Contact Sheets from the series “ We Are Ugly but We Have the Music ”
Music became a central part of my life early on. In the late ’70s and early ‘80s, I found my home, my safe place, in music. With a fake student ID, I snuck into the school disco, stepping into a space that, though modest by today’s standards, felt like a sanctuary. The music was a wild mix—ska, wave, heavy metal, kraut, glam, rock’n’roll, disco, hip hop—everything played together, with Mods, Skins, Rockabilly, Metalheads, and Disco Queens all gathering in one place because, well, you took what you got.

If I liked a track, until today, no matter the genre, I’d go to the dance floor and lose myself—even though I’m still an introvert at heart. To this day, I feel no barriers between music styles or the tribes that come with them. My hunger and necessity for music, my need to know all the background information; where it comes from and what it stands for, remains unquenched. So here I am, still roaming through this endless cosmos of sounds, floating.

Today is #worldmentalhealthday . On this day, I want to not only raise awareness about my own mental health, but also remember all the invisible fighters and survivors, who silently battle their inner darkness .

Those who are ashamed to speak openly about their mental struggles—whether it’s depression, anxiety, burnout, or other mental illnesses and their consequences in abusing different substances to disinfect or calm down they inner struggles .

Those who withdraw and go silent out of fear of stigma, even though they are suffering inside. And those who get up every day to keep going, often wearing a mask because the shame of being mentally ill feels too overwhelming.

I think of those we’ve lost to suicide, because their despair and exhaustion drove them into a darkness and loneliness, where death seemed like the only way out.

I also think of those who tirelessly fight to make mental illnesses more visible in our society—who work to ensure that depression, anxiety disorders, PTSD, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, neurodivergence and so on, are taken as seriously as physical illness. Whether these are temporary crises or lifelong mental health conditions, it is vital that we destigmatize them and stop treating them as taboo.

It can happen to anyone. So let’s listen closely, especially to those who have stopped speaking and withdrawn. Let’s try to speak openly when we’re not okay, when we struggle with ourselves or feel overwhelmed by inner battles. Sometimes, all it takes is a listening ear or a little understanding to help shrink the heavy, dark black Dog of mental illness just a little bit.
