Defy Gravity… Wow. That was honestly one of the best experiences I’ve ever had.The morning of the battle I visualized myself giving my round everything I had, flowing perfectly to the music, and fully expressing myself. I actually started to cry imagining how that would feel. I wanted to convey something like: “Hi, I’m Amelia. This is who tf I am and this is what I can do!” That mindset made a huge difference. It also helps that there’s not a lot of time to think lol. You just go. Watching my round back I couldn’t believe how good it turned out, especially as someone who struggles to perform. Not only was it one of my best runs ever recorded, it was SO authentically me 🥹I love what the battle environment unlocks in dancers. I had no choice in that moment but to truly let go and flow. My movements were smoother and more committed because I wasn’t overthinking.I’ve spent my entire life admiring other dancers, never thinking that could be me, but through this experience I proved to myself what I’m capable of. I discovered a confident and expressive person I didn’t know was there! I couldn’t be more proud of myself 💕Thank you to @marygrace for organizing this incredible event, to the judges @gillytheanswer, @kathryneaddy, and @kasanatorr for witnessing each of us, and to @shibe.ig, @mizu_95, and @bomb_chelles for sharing the floor with me. Michelle is the person who inspired me to want to start battling, so to dance alongside her for my first one was so special. And the way she ran up to me at the end?? 🥹🩷I cannot fully express my gratitude for the support I felt this weekend. It meant so much to me that my people recognized what a big milestone this was. To everyone who checked in some way, thank you so much🫶I am so grateful for this music, this dance, and this community. I don’t think that I would have felt safe to express the way I did if it weren’t for y’all. The other dancers I witnessed showed a dedication to the craft that has inspired me to redouble my own. Today marks 2 years since I arrived in San Diego. Moving here has brought more love and joy into my life than I knew was possible. I love California! I love the people here, I love that you can be outdoors all year round, and I love who I’ve become since living here. I’ve never felt more connected to my own authenticity, more confident, or more loved just as I am. I’m forever grateful that I took the risk and left everything behind, even my long term relationship, to pursue what I knew in my soul was best for me. Coming here has only further opened my eyes to what is possible and allowed me to dream even bigger! 🤩It hasn’t all been easy. I’m in the midst of some of the most difficult times I’ve ever had to face, but being here has given me so much life and shown me a path where I can find joy and light alongside the challenges each day. To everyone who has been a part of the journey so far: thank you. The biggest shoutout goes to the @sdshufflers community. I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to thrive the way I have without y’all 💞 by @amelia_moves
