#RIP Richard Serra, whose installation in Gagosian’s inaugural exhibition in the 24th Street space was the turning point in my life. #Switch indeed!

In the fall of 1999, six art history majors were planning to take the subway downtown after class to explore what they had heard was a new neighborhood of art galleries in Chelsea. Their professor overheard them and said that it wasn’t safe and that he would chaperone them. This was weird not because of what he said about safety but because I didn’t think my art history professor was interested in anything outside the ivy-covered campus. I mean, contemporary art – heck, any art past World War I – wasn’t even in my curriculum!

But he said he was curious to see a new gallery on West 24th Street between 10th and 11th. (I was living on 8th Avenue and 21st Street, and TBH I was too scared to venture west of 9th Avenue on my own. Ah how times have changed!) So we took the subway down to Chelsea and ventured into the few new galleries that had just opened. I remember my professor was saying that starting an art gallery was not easy at all. We met a few gallery directors and had a crash course in the art market.

The sun started to set, and we huddled not because it was getting cold but because we were a little scared walking around an unsafe and underlit neighborhood. We were so glad we took up our professor’s gallant protection!

Our last stop was on 24th Street. Our professor opened the door to what I thought was a garage. We stepped inside, and I gave an audible gasp when I saw those towering corten steel plates.

My first trip to Chelsea when it was a fledgling art neighborhood, and I was awestruck. I mean, I was going to the Met every week to look at masterpieces, but I had seen nothing like this before. Contemporary Art with a capital C!

It was then I knew what I could do with my art history degree. That trip to Chelsea with my fellow art majors turned on a switch in me – it was then I knew I wanted to work in a commercial art gallery. by @ameliaabdullahsani

Posted @withregram • @busstopart_sg The beauty of Bus.Stop.Art? You can't avoid it. Experience it at any time of day, be it rain or shine. Check out the work by @perceptionthree titled "You Will Not Feel This Way Forever". The work acts as a reminder and warning of a volatile and ambiguous future.
