Painted these little monarchs for my sister a long time ago, and I thought they deserved a post 🧡🤍🖤

Last month, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) declared the migratory monarch butterfly endangered. Their migration is epic--over multiple generations, they travel up to 3,000 miles between the US and Canada, and Mexico every year. They're the only butterfly known to do this, and no one fully understands how they do it!! In early 2020, I was lucky enough to see their overwintering grounds in Michoacan, Mexico, when I was visiting my sister in Mexico City. It was one of the most incredible things I've seen in my life (swipe to see a video).

Deforestation in the Oyamel forests they call home for the winter is putting them at risk, as well as pesticide use and climate change which threaten their most important food source, milkweed. You can help monarchs by planting milkweed, protecting native grasslands, avoiding pesticides, and advocating for action on climate change. 🌱

Tried something new and broke out the acrylics for a Mother’s day gift for my wonderful momma 💙 In 2008, we did a short family canoe trip on Lake Superior, and we camped at this beach. There was a nesting pair of eagles in the big white pine then. We hiked there two days ago, and a pair of eagles were in the same tree with three fuzzy nestlings. Eagles live 20-30 years, so it’s pretty likely that it’s the same eagles we saw twelve years ago. Here’s to amazing mothers of all species. by @ameliacole.art

I had to write an article for my environmental journalism class about Blanchard’s cricket frogs, and I needed an image to go with it. Now I have this drawing and lot of random knowledge about these lil’ guys.
_____________________________________________
Blanchard’s cricket frogs are endangered or threatened in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Minnesota. .
They’re doing fine in the southern parts of their range (states like Texas and Arkansas) but they’ve been disappearing in the north and one really knows why.
_____________________________________________
They only live about 12-14 months. This is super rare for amphibians. They’re basically an “annual species”. This also might be part of the reason they’re declining (if you only have one chance to breed, you’re pretty vulnerable to population declines). ————————————————————
The good news: Blanchard cricket frog populations seem to be holding steady or even growing slightly in Wisconsin and Ohio. by @ameliacole.art

This was a fun one! It was a full hunter’s moon yesterday, so I decided to add a little color to this little moon sketch. .

inktober day 9: amphibian

Spring peepers may make a lot of noise, but they can be about the size of a fingernail, and they’re pretty much the cutest things around. These lil’ guys are tough, too. Their bodies often freeze while they hibernate through the winter, but they thaw back out in the spring and start singing again. .
