It’s so easy to see how deeply ingrained racism is in our society when you observe white and white-washed people existing comfortably within the safety of their communities, mistaking overcompensation in racial “awareness” for actual progress. Their subtle elitism only further reveals a disconnect from the realities faced by those most vulnerable to oppression. Equality doesn’t require self-congratulation, it requires humility, listening, and action.

When I was young I spent most days with my grandma after school winding down to PBS while coloring waters to the backdrop of Bob Ross’ gentle tones. This one was for her ✨🙏🏽🎨

That’s Why I Laugh / Cry
24” x 48” | stretched canvas, acrylic

At the center of That’s Why I Laugh / Cry is a conversation between “Lose Myself” by Lauryn Hill and “Laughing, Crying, Loving, Lying” by Labi Siffre. Labi Siffre’s refrain, “Laughing, laughing sometimes does somebody some good somehow, that’s why I’m laughing now,” floats through the composition as thought bubbles, interrupting Lauryn Hill’s lyrics.

The overlapping lyrics represent a mind arguing with itself—past thoughts interrupting the present. The repeated refrain becomes both a coping mechanism and a performance, capturing the manic hysteria of convincing yourself you’ve let something go while your mind continues to circle back. The piece reflects the emotional highs and lows of a brain working against itself.
