Happy Fir-st birthday our magnificent, magnetic Fir. You have so far lived up to name - grounded, calm and strong. You handled a wildfire evacuation at 3 months with patience and ease and showed assured adaptability when I was in ICU for a week and had to stop breastfeeding. You made the transition to formula without hesitation or complaint. You slept through the night for our neighbors almost knowing you needed too. Your intuition and maturity for a being so young is unrivaled. You rarely cry and your tears run from joy and belly laughs. You love Enya and meat on the bone as much as your mama and you can unnerve any self-assured adult with your unwavering stare.

We evacuated last Tuesday under apocalyptic-orange plumes. I repeated the words ‘my family is my home’ as we drove along the edge of Saddlepeak, a community just over the ridge line from us and one which would be raised. I had come to the conclusion that our house would most definitely be lost to the rage and power of this wildfire. This was the one. I knew living in Topanga came with uncertainty being in a high risk fire zone but never did I expect multiple roaring hell scapes to wipe out entire suburban communities in mere hours. The speed at which the fire moved was unprecedented. I refreshed the Watch Duty app by the minute, almost wanting that creeping red line to engulf our little Fernwood nook so that I could get on and grieve but it took days. Days of excruciating anxiety, hundreds of whatsapp updates from mobilised Topangans that had stayed behind, days of being a disengaged mother endlessly staring at my phone whilst my 3 month old cooed. Days until the winds died down enough to re-engage hope. And only because of a bit of luck, time, wind direction and the heroic efforts of locals, firefighters and the VLAT air assaults the magical Topanga community was mostly saved. But it doesn’t diminish how devastating these fires were and It feels almost trite being grateful that our house still stands whilst so many others fell. So many people lost their homes and livelihoods and it will take a long time to process the sheer amount of tangible loss.
