Time travel, anyone? How about a grumpy-sunshine dynamic? Or a storyline that feels like a classic adventure movie?

Well, you can find all the above in KARABOS by @lyndseylewellen, which has released TODAY from @enclavepublishing!

What a ride this time travel novel is. Fantastical coastline academy, homeschooled entomologist, prickly yet endearing cartographer, worldbuilding reminiscent of 1920s treasure-hunting films and Old Testament Egypt, strong dynamics of family and friendship, scarab-hunting scholarship tournament, conflicts of worldviews and apologetics, heart-tugging threads of romance, a timeline undergirded with a sense of providence…boasting all those elements and more, Karabos pulses with impossible-to-predict twists and thematic weight.

An engaging and entirely satisfying first installment, KARABOS has me rooting so hard for Winslet and Rafe and praising the One Source who crafted our timeline with abundant intention.

To ring in October, I’m honored to share that my third published short story has officially taken up residence at @pearlmag.co.

A dark academia magical realism tale, “Starwood” follows a young man desperate to save his brother—desperate enough to return to the last place he wants to go for help.

I’m in the mood to rewatch some Star Wars animation, revisit the Arthurian legends, and reread the Drifter and Spirits’ Valley duologies, because RAVEN CRIES WAR by C.M. Banschbach is officially up on Kickstarter today!

Described as King Arthur meets Star Wars Rebels, with a hearty helping of high tech action and slow burn romance, this science fantasy novel looks exciting and all-around amazing.

From a beautifully misty autumn equinox here in the Midwest, I wish you a very merry Hobbit Day, my friends.

It’s lovely that the first official day of autumn falls on the birthday of our beloved Bagginses. Coziness and wanderlust flavor the season, just as they do at the beginning of The Lord of the Rings, and it feels like the cusp of an adventure that always carries the hope of homecoming.

This weekend, The Fellowship of the Ring filled the television in my house. Under warm lamplight and fuzzy blankets, I watched hobbits festoon the Shire for Bilbo’s eleventy-first birthday. Bilbo clutched and then rejected the Ring. Men, an Elf, a Dwarf, a wizard, and four Hobbits crested a mountain (indeed the most epic walking-past-a-rock scene in cinematic history). Frodo set off for Mordor alone—and Sam plunged into the river after him.

Bilbo and Frodo’s birthday is the spark for this journey.

Perseverance. Nobility. Bonds of fellowship. Temptation and triumph. Life lived. Light and hope shattering the Shadow and every nameless fear.

The Lord of the Rings is a tale that really matters. Every year—multiple times a year but especially on Hobbit Day—I attempt and feel like I fail to describe how meaningful the tale is.

And once again, I’ll let the Professor speak for himself.

I’m grateful he battled his own fears so this story could reach publication, and eventually the silver screen.

Happy birthday, Bilbo and Frodo.

Thank you, Professor Tolkien. I look forward to laughing together someday in the place called heaven where the good is completed and the stories continue.

What’s an ebook you’re currently reading? Or what’s one you have in your queue?

For me, I’m saying a huge thank you to @enclavepublishing for these review copies of EMBERS by Ronie Kendig and THE TIME DOOR by Shannon McDermott! Both look fascinating, and I’ve had them on my TBR for quite some time. So I’m looking forward to curling up with my Kindle and beginning another epic fantasy and another imaginative sci-fi from the Enclave catalogue.

Have you read The Shattered Ones?

If not, and if you’re stirred by the thought of hopeful dystopian, then the Aftermath series (of which The Shattered Ones is the first) by Brigitte Cromey should earn a place on your TBR. It’s equal parts comforting and electrifying, and its food, family, and fierce fighting for the good of a desolate region will linger in your thoughts long after you’ve closed the novel.
