"marketing strategy" is one of those phrases that means everything and nothing because it's used so willy nilly.

here's how we describe it. your strategy is the line of the map. it's where your business is now, where you want it to get to, and the route between the two. the tactics are what's in your rucksack to help you get there: socials, seo, email, ads, the lot.

which is why "you should be on tiktok" "meta ads are the only way for new leads" "have you tried a flash mob" are almost never the right places to start. it's asking what to pack before anyone's figured out where you're going. you could be packing all wrong for the climate.

so the first hour of a strategy session isn't really about marketing. it's about your dream destination. how that looks, feels, smells. it's once we know where you want to go, we make sure your suitcase is correctly packed. no wasted budget on sunscreen in the artic.

and we love these days. working out where someone's business goes next is the best part of this job.

when leads slow down, dropping your price feels like the fastest fix. it usually isn't a strategic decision though and it can impact you more than just on the bottom line.

so what do you do instead?

show the value that's already there. most people aren't hesitating on price, they're hesitating because they can't see what makes you different from the three other options in their tab. better results, deeper expertise, easier communication, less stress for them. say it clearly and say it often, because it isn't obvious from the outside.

add value rather than taking money off. extend a support period, include an extra service, add a check in. the client feels like they've gained something and you have had more opportunity to show how wonderful you are.

back yourself when you say the price. "it's $2,000" lands completely differently to "it's $2,000, but I could do a discount if that's too much?" that confidence comes from knowing who you're for and what your work is actually worth, and clients can hear the difference immediately.

the clients you want aren't shopping for the cheapest option. that is a race to the bottom and there is no loyalty at the bottom. they're looking for the person they can trust to get it right 🧡

one of our favourite parts of a first conversation is walking someone through what the months ahead actually look like.

because marketing works the way most good things do. the early weeks are foundations, and they mostly feel quiet. then you start noticing small signs of movement. and slowly the trust compounds, because someone has seen your name a few times now, and they've read something you wrote, and by the time they get in touch they already feel like they know you.

that's the part nobody can rush, and it's the part worth waiting for, because trust built slowly tends to stay.

most people who walk away from marketing aren't impatient. they just never got told what normal looks like, so they try something for eight weeks, see very little, and reasonably decide it isn't for them. every channel runs on a different clock too, which is why there's no single timeline for all of them.

yes, we know. using a trend to talk about not using trends. bear with us.

we get asked this a lot. do we need to be doing the trendy stuff on instagram? does someone have to dance?

it comes down to one thing. who are you actually talking to.

if it's your clients, the question is who they are. gen x and up, trends aren't where they're looking. millennials and under, there's more room to move. either way, if your brand voice is the steady, considered, unbothered type, forcing a trend reads as off and your audience notices the seams.

the exception is recruitment. hiring young people is a different audience, and a 23 year old sizing up your team culture is reading for whether they'd fit in. your clients, who might not be in that demographic at all, are looking for something else entirely.
trends are a quick way to look like somewhere people enjoy working. just keep the balance right, so the content you're using to attract staff isn't crowding out the content your clients came for.

even then, watch the shelf life. trend content can do well while it's live and then sour fast. post it three weeks late and it does the opposite of what you wanted.

the rest of the time we'd put that energy into evergreen content. the post that still makes sense long after "kinda chic", "the saxophones are getting louder", and "preparing for my Netflix documentary" has gone the way of every trend before it.

your google business profile is doing more work than your website, and most of it happens before anyone reaches you.

someone searches, your profile comes up, and they read the reviews, look at the photos, check the hours and decide whether to call. plenty of them never make it to your site at all.

which is why it's worth five minutes every few months rather than just five minutes once when you set it up. hours that haven't been touched since something changed, categories vaguer than they need to be, photos of a practice that doesn't quite look like that anymore. all small things, all quietly costing you.

one thing worth being clear about: keeping it current isn't going to move you up the rankings on its own. what it does is convert the people who have already found you. those are different jobs and they get conflated constantly, usually by someone selling a monthly posting package.

five minutes, zero dollars, and it's the highest-leverage free thing most local businesses aren't doing. deeper walkthrough is on our site if you want it 🧡 taken in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia by @ameliore.marketing

some very happy news to share 💜

after six months of maternity leave, our founder millie is officially back, and she's brought a big change with her: ameliore is now based in melbourne!

millie grew up here, so this one's a homecoming. and melbourne isn't just gaining her, it's gaining our home base too. we've grown into a team supporting clients right across australia, and that doesn't change with a postcode. our adelaide and interstate client family are as much a part of ameliore as ever.

what it does change: if you're a melbourne service business who's been meaning to sort out your marketing, there's now a real person here to have a real coffee with. and yes, the first one's still on us ☕

welcome back millie, and hello melbourne!

a few years in and you're exhausted. you're doing all the "right" things. posting, cold emailing, networking, showing up consistently. but somewhere along the way it stopped being something you wanted to do and started being something you had to. sound familiar?

that's what happens when the excitement wears off and you lose touch with why you started.

your why isn't a polished mission statement. it's not "i'm passionate about my industry" or whatever sounds good on your website. it's the real, honest reason you'd give a close friend over coffee when they ask why you actually do this.

most of us stop at the surface version. "i saw a gap in the market."

the honest one sounds more like this: "i watched good businesses in my industry get talked into paying for things they didn't need, and i got sick of being the only person in the room telling them the truth."

one of those you can say at a networking event. the other one gets you through the hard weeks.
and when you're clear on which one is yours, the decisions get easier. who you take on, what you charge, where you put your energy.

we've put together 7 honest questions to help you find yours. grab 30 minutes this week, no distractions, just you and a notebook. free guide on our site, link in bio ✨

we sell seo, and we talk people out of it fairly regularly 🙃

it usually goes like this. someone comes to us because a competitor mentioned it, or an article told them to, and the first question we ask is how their last five clients found them. if the answer is a referral, a referral, someone at a networking thing, a referral, and one google search, seo is not the thing to fix first.

that's not us being noble about it. it's that seo takes months to show anything, and if you're spending that time and money while the channel actually bringing you work goes unattended, you've gone backwards.

where it does earn its place: when people are searching for what you do plus where you are, when you have capacity you want filled, when you're building something you want to still be working in three years. those are real reasons and it's worth the wait.

what we'd rather everyone did first is the free bit. a complete google business profile, a site that works on a phone, and pages that actually name the thing you do. that's an afternoon, not a retainer.

new guide's live if you want to work out which camp you're in, link in bio ☕

health professionals have figured out something powerful: people don't just want expertise. they want to feel understood 💜

and honestly? every service business could benefit from this approach.

whether you're a consultant, designer, accountant, or running any other service business, the principles are the same. make it feel safe. educate before you sell. show the humans. focus on transformation, not process. check in,

when people are making important decisions, they need clarity and confidence. not a sales pitch ✨ taken in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia by @ameliore.marketing
