My name is Amer. That’s usually where it starts.

“Where are you from?”
Jersey.
“No but where are you from from?”
Jersey City.
“Okay but like, originally?”

I learned to lie before I learned to drive. Because the real answer is Palestine, and I was 14 and didn’t have 20 minutes for a stranger’s opinion on the Middle East. And everyone had one. Nobody ever asked for mine.

I grew up in the shadow of the towers. That day changed everything for everybody, including kids who never got a vote on being born Palestinian and Muslim in America. I had two childhoods running at the same time. Arabic at the dinner table, my mother’s Malooba, my father’s stories. Then Saturday morning Nickelodeon cartoons, quarter waters, and jumping the turnstile to hop on the PATH. I wasn’t torn between two worlds. I was both. People just kept asking me to pick.

25 years later and I’m still here. Building in the same city that raised me, raising my kids a few miles from where I used to shrink my own name.

This country is beautiful. I never doubted that. I just spent a long time wondering if it had room for all of me.

Turns out it did. Some people just took a while to catch up.
