DAF Day 2026 is here. Today is a nationwide celebration of generosity through donor-advised funds, the fastest-growing form of philanthropy in the country. When you make a DAF gift to the American Brain Foundation today, you help fund groundbreaking research to cure brain diseases.

DAFs make giving easier, more strategic, and more impactful:
✅ Flexibility – give when inspiration strikes, or after thoughtful evaluation.
✅ Simplicity – manage all your giving from one account.
✅ Power – grow your giving potential with invested funds and tax perks.

🧡 DAF Day is the perfect time to use your DAF to support brain research and be part of a nationwide wave of giving. And remember, we currently have an active match campaign. That means all donations—including gifts from a DAF—will be matched, making twice the impact to fund research!

Chemotherapy can save lives, but for some people it can also leave lasting damage to the nerves. Dr. Tiffany Li, our 2025 Next Generation Research Grant recipient in Peripheral Neuropathy, is looking into which patients may be most vulnerable, potentially giving clinicians an opportunity to monitor them more closely and intervene earlier. She is the lead author in a new study published in Neurology, which evaluated 901 individuals who had received chemotherapy treatments in Australia. Dr. Li and her colleagues found that patients are more at risk for developing chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) if they are older, are female, have diabetes, have higher BMI, or have previously had neurotoxic chemo.

Congratulations to Drs. Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann, and Georg Nagel, who were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine today for their neuroscience discoveries. The three scientists’ research established the field of optogenetics, which involves using pulses of light to activate or turn off discrete groups of neurons in the brain. Optogenetics has become a foundational tool for exploring neural circuitry involved in memory, parenting behavior, psychiatric diseases, and countless neurological disorders. It’s helping researchers to understand and potentially treat blindness, depression, addiction, and dementia.

“Before, we had an anatomical map of the brain,” said Anna Wedell, a professor of clinical genetics at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, who was part of the Nobel awarding committee. “Now we can generate functional maps, and we can also understand how different cells speak to each other across the brain.”

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Millions of women experience traumatic brain injuries (TBI) due to domestic violence every year. Director Sydney Scotia’s 2023 documentary This Hits Home, which explores the long-term effects of domestic violence, is now available to watch for free on streaming platform Tubi (no subscription required).

This Hits Home shines an unflinching light on the experiences of survivors and discusses how TBI can lead life-long changes in memory, mood, and other cognitive functions, and the degenerative brain disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). For many survivors of domestic violence, the impact of TBI on thinking and memory lasts long after the abuse ends.

The Domestic Violence Hotline offers free and confidential 24/7 support at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233), or text “START” to 88788.

Researcher Spotlight: Meet Lenora Higginbotham, MD, a recipient of one of our 2026 Cure One, Cure Many Awards in Lewy Body Dementia (LBD). This is the second most common form of dementia after Alzheimer’s, but research is needed to find a way to diagnose it in living patients. Working at @emoryuniversity in Atlanta, Dr. Higginbotham and her team will study LBD plasma samples and run large-scale analysis of all proteins in the cells using machine-learning approaches. This will help scientists identify the key biological signatures of LBD at a molecular level and understand how patterns may differ between patients.

Dr. Higginbotham was also a recipient of an American Brain Foundation Next Generation Research Grant for LBD in 2020. This $1 million award is funded in collaboration with the Alzheimer’s Association and the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
