Islamic Relief USA has officially changed its name to IDEA — Islamic Development & Empowerment in America.

The organization announced the new identity on September 15, marking a new chapter for one of the most recognized Muslim humanitarian organizations in the United States.

IDEA says the new name reflects its American Muslim roots and its continued commitment to humanitarian relief, long-term development, sustainability and empowering vulnerable communities.

While the name and branding have changed, the organization says it remains the same U.S.-based 501(c)(3), with its existing teams, programs and humanitarian work continuing under the IDEA name.

For decades, the organization has provided humanitarian assistance both across the United States and around the world, supported by donors and volunteers throughout the American Muslim community.

My Uncle, Mohamed Maasarani was a distinguished mechanical engineer who earned his Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Columbia University. Following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, he dedicated years of selfless service at the World Trade Center site, contributing to the recovery and rebuilding efforts during one of the most challenging periods in American history. His unwavering commitment came at a tremendous personal cost, as he later developed and ultimately passed away from a 9/11-related cancer linked to his work at Ground Zero. In recognition of his outstanding service and sacrifice, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey honored him with a commemorative flag that had flown over the World Trade Center in his name. Mohamed Maasarani’s life exemplified excellence, compassion, and service to others, leaving behind a legacy of courage and dedication that continues to inspire the American Muslim community and all who value selfless public service. #rip911victims💔❤️ by @americasmuslimnetwork

NEW YORK — New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani extended warm greetings to Muslims across the city and around the world in recognition of Mawlid al-Nabi, commemorating the birth and legacy of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

“Mawlid al-Nabi Mubarak to Muslims in New York City and around the world,” Mamdani wrote in a public statement Tuesday.

The mayor honored the life and enduring legacy of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, highlighting the values of compassion, generosity, justice, faith and service that have inspired communities for more than 1,400 years.

Mamdani said the Prophet’s example reminds New Yorkers that caring for one another, embracing diversity and serving their communities can make the city stronger.

“Wishing joy, peace, and blessings upon all who celebrate,” the mayor concluded.

As New York City’s first Muslim mayor, Mamdani’s message carries special significance for Muslim New Yorkers, many of whom have long worked toward greater representation and recognition in the city’s civic life.

His statement also reflects the diversity of a city that is home to one of the largest and most vibrant Muslim communities in the United States.

A new state law requiring local law-enforcement agencies to end formal cooperation agreements with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement took effect across New York on Tuesday, placing Nassau County at the center of a growing political and legal confrontation.

The Local Cops, Local Crimes Act prohibits local police departments, sheriff’s offices and county jails from entering into or maintaining agreements that allow local officers to perform federal civil immigration-enforcement duties. It also restricts counties from using local facilities and resources to detain individuals solely for civil immigration violations.

The law does not prevent local authorities from working with federal agencies on criminal investigations. Its focus is on preventing local police officers and correctional facilities from being used for civil immigration enforcement.

Most New York counties have agreed to terminate their arrangements with ICE. Nassau County, however, has not committed to ending its agreements and is considering a legal challenge.

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, a close political ally of President Donald Trump, has strongly defended the county’s partnership with ICE. Blakeman has made immigration enforcement a major part of his public-safety platform and argues that ending the partnership would make Nassau County less safe.

Blakeman is also the Republican candidate for governor, challenging Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul in the November 3 election. His resistance to the law is now more than a local dispute—it has become part of the statewide race for governor.

Hochul has positioned the new law as a public-safety measure, arguing that local officers should focus on local crimes instead of acting as federal immigration agents. Her administration has warned that counties refusing to comply could face legal action and risk losing access to certain state funding.

VALLEY STREAM, NY — Parents, students, and community members are raising serious concerns involving alleged discrimination, unequal treatment, curriculum decisions, Regents examination exemptions, and possible retaliation within the Valley Stream Central High School District.

Among the issues raised are questions about the amount of classroom time devoted to 9/11, whether students were provided with balanced historical context, and how Regents “E” exemptions were offered to English Language Learners and immigrant families.

Families are seeking answers about whether parents gave informed consent, whether immigration-related fears influenced these decisions, and whether students understood how an exemption could affect their academic records and future opportunities.

Community members have also reported concerns involving the treatment of Haitian, Latino, South Asian, Sikh, Muslim, and other immigrant students, as well as educators who reportedly spoke out.

These allegations deserve a fair and transparent review. Every student, regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, language, or immigration background, deserves to feel respected, protected, and supported in school.
