Can we talk?

Yes, it’s time once again to go over an extremely important topic: Cosplay is not consent. If you are a cosplayer, creator, or con goer, you’ve undoubtedly come across this phrase on posters, flyers, and event web sites. Hopefully you understand its significance.

For everyone else: “Cosplay is not consent” means that, regardless of how revealing a cosplay is, you do not have the right to physically or verbally accost us. A bodycon dress, a skintight zentai suit, revealing battle armor, a corseted superhero outfit, a swimsuit, even Vampirella’s sling suit: these are all cosplays, either representative of a character’s attire or inspired by it. They are not us personally! We put time, energy, and money into our cosplays as a creative outlet, to make people smile, and to honor our favorite fandoms. For many of us, becoming somebody else, even for a few hours, helps us deal with social anxieties. We also cosplay as a family activity and to represent a fandom with friends.

Cosplay is NOT sexual dress-up. Social-media cosplay accounts are NOT a directory of costumed individuals waiting to fulfill your personal fantasies. Not even the boudoir cosplays or the flirtier versions of characters. Our cosplays are our way of expressing ourselves, of improving our crafting abilities, of seeing just how well we can bring a character to life.

Cosplay is never an invitation to comment on our bodies. It is never an invitation to send us lewd images or descriptions of sexual acts. It is never consent to save our photos for your own private fantasy album on your phone. And it is never consent to continually message us about how much you “love” our more revealing cosplays or to ask us to post more photos of these.

If you truly like our cosplays, comment in a positive, supportive manner. Example: your PowerGirl looks exactly like her comic art! NEVER: Hot! Sexy! Nice tits! These are NOT compliments. No, they aren’t.

TBT to this past weekend, for one last time (at least as a post, I promise!). May I present my new daughter-in-law, @colorful_kelll!
