One of my favorite simple tools for teaching the curveball?
These bright little mini cones from Dollar Tree.

I’ve been using them since 2020 — picked up about 10 in the teaching section, and I’ve never looked back. At $1.25, it’s probably the cheapest tool you’ll ever buy… but the impact? Huge.

When I teach curveballs, I always start with the fingers first. Then we build into the wrist, the forearm, and finally full body connection — including footwork, posture, and power line. But those cones? They’re key for feeling the spin right at the source: your fingers.

Earlier this year, during a January pitching boot camp, I got to work with one of my college pitchers — Amia — and we used the cone drill to fine-tune her curveball before the season kicked off.

Now, Amia already has a great curve. But she had never done the cone drill before.
She tends to get a little “risey” with her curveball — thanks to her natural hand angle — but with a few body adjustments and using the cones to focus on finger feel and shoulder positioning, she made awesome progress. You could see her starting to connect the dots in real-time.

This is the kind of stuff I LOVE. Simple. Intentional. Effective.

Amia — I miss you and the Colby girls so much!
I’m so proud of the season you’re having and cheering you on big as y’all wrap it up strong.

To all my pitchers: don’t underestimate the power of a $1.25 cone and the right instruction.
Sometimes, the simplest tools lead to the biggest breakthroughs.

Let’s Talk About Leaping, Replanting, and Crowhopping

Before you start commenting on whether this athlete is leaping, replanting, or crowhopping, here’s the reality: umpires were calling her illegal. Last year, this completely disrupted her mental game during a college conference tournament. Some umpires let it go, while others called it every time, and it got to the point where she had to be taken out of games.

This is where I struggle with the inconsistency in how these rules are enforced. The differences between leaping, replanting, and crowhopping are subtle, but the impact they can have on a pitcher’s performance and confidence is massive.

Here’s why I don’t teach my girls to leap:
1️⃣ It’s basically an airborne drag and doesn’t add true value.
2️⃣ It can easily develop into a replant or crowhop—both of which are definitely illegal for good reason.

My focus is always on helping pitchers become confident and consistent so they never have to worry about being pulled from games for illegal pitching calls. Confidence comes from mastering clean mechanics and trusting in your ability to play within the rules.

This transformation? It’s the result of just three months of disciplined work inside my Next Level Academy and working through my drag leg course.

What are your thoughts on these rule inconsistencies? Why don’t umpires enforce them every time? And if you’re ready to correct these issues and maintain confidence in the circle, comment “Next Level,” and let’s get to work! taken in Colby Community College by @amia_sims
