this one’s for the singers 🫶🏻 christmas music was playing at work today, and the day was slow… perfect time to slip away to play with vocals in my favorite ambient room. i certainly have not mastered blending my registers, but it’s too fun to play around and discover how different sounds/registers feel. especially on beautiful tunes like O Come, O Come Emmanuel…

When thinking of sharing the final product of our efforts, one of the most important things to me was to convey where the song came from. I always say, I’m not really a writer… usually something happens in life and in processing it, a song may bubble up almost with a life of its own… and so here is the story of Stars.

December 2024 we got started… yep, this song has been a long time coming. I had a rough vision of its sound, but bringing it to life in a compelling way would take artists of each instrument. We knew it needed real strings. Cello, specifically. Maybe Hannah, @ohhh.shute will play? And it needed a base player who slaps. Call up Dante, @blkychan1. Andrew, @stravs the drums are all yours. And me on keys? Heaven help us all… I can’t keep to the metronome to save my life. Shoulda stuck thru piano lessons. But okay, we’ll go for it.

And together, we desired to communicate something… that maybe, just maybe, when it was all said and done, would stir the hearts of some who’d listen.

What song should we record? Well, I wrote this one, Stars, years ago. It’s not the all time best song I’ve ever written, but I think it’s good. And more importantly, it means something to me. It’s a song meant to incite remembrance, and believe me, I need that. If we’re gonna try this studio recording thing again, let’s do Stars.

I write this post as a beginning of a story leading up to the release of Stars on Friday! Thanks for being here 🫶🏻

Creating something from nothing. And in the studio nonetheless? Thrilling. Scary. I’ve never finished one of my own songs in a studio. Why would it be different this time? What if I can’t find the words to express what I imagine in my mind? What if I can’t get the vocal takes that feel right? What if I can’t keep the rhythm? What if my spirit gets lost while trying to “get it right”? <— The inner dialogue that surfaces every time the headphones go on and the metronome starts clicking.

As mother would say, “Oh, hush.” Close your eyes, sing from that place inside that you know. Trust the process…

The moment that started it all. As I wandered around this church in Haarlem - one in which Mozart himself had played - couldn’t help but wonder how it would sound and feel to play my own instrument there. After getting brave enough to sing something in the side wings, the meaningful encounters with others in the space left such an impact that I decided maybe singing during my travels needed to be a thing.
